Star Wars https://comicbook.com/starwars/feed/rss/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 10:54:08 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Star Wars RSS Generator Star Wars Prop of Original X-Wing Sells for Record-Setting $2.6 Million https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-x-wing-model-prop-sells-sold-3-million-dollars-record-auction/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 18:41:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 0b2bd1c5-5234-42f6-a526-6a6a684792f4

The model of a Star Wars X-wing starfighter - an original prop used in filming the original Star Wars movie A New Hope - has sold for a record-setting $3.135 million at a Heritage Auction in Dallas, Texas over the weekend.

The model X-wing was a piece from the collection of the late Oscar-nominated VFX specialist and model maker Greg Jein (Star Trek movies, Avatar, Oblivion, Interstellar), which had been thought lost for decades before turning up in one of the boxes found Jein's garage, following his death in May of 2022.

"Heritage just set the record for the most expensive Star Wars screen-used prop sold at auction," Joe Maddalena, exec vp Hollywood/entertainment memorabilia at Heritage Auctions, said in a statement to THR. "The worldwide response to the Greg Jein collections has been outstanding, a true testament to Greg and all he accomplished as visual effects artist and collector."

According to specs of the model provided at auction, this model X-wing was built by Industrial Light & Magic to be flown by "Red Leader" (or "Red One") in the climatic space dogfight between the Rebel Alliance and The Empire's Death Star base. The model is "one of just four 'hero' filming miniatures with articulating servo-controlled wings and lights, used for close-up shots of the dogfight during the final battle, including the iconic trench run sequence.

VFX historian Gene Kozicki explained to THR just how significant this particular Star Wars prop really is: "This model has not been displayed or modified since it left ILM. For those of us that grew up in the '70s or '80s, and those of us that work in visual effects, this model is as significant a find as the ruby red slippers or the Maltese Falcon."

(Photo: Lucasfilm)

He added that this particular X-wing model had become more than a mystery when it went missing: it became a myth of the industry: "It became something of a mythical 'white whale' -- the missing Star Wars X-wing."

Obviously these days Star Wars Memorabilia is a major source of value and wealth. Auctions of props, costumes, artwork, and other elements of various Star Wars productions routinely sell for high price at auction, and/or end up in the collections of passionate (read: wealthy) collectors. The record-setting price for this model X-wing makes sense given the 'mythical' status it earned during its years being lost.

Star Wars movies and TV series can be streamed on Disney+.

Star Wars Actor Ahmed Best Wants To Play Blue Marvel https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/star-wars-actor-jar-jar-binks-ahmed-best-wants-to-play-blue-marvel/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 02:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 90499ad9-59f2-4c50-b17d-0432367177dc

Ahmed Best is known for playing Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars, and the actor recently returned to the franchise as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq. Like many actors, Best is interested in being in more than one Disney franchise. The actor previously expressed interest in playing Mister Fantastic, and now he's taken to social media with another casting idea: Blue Marvel. Blue Marvel/Adam Bernard Brashear was first introduced by Marvel Comics in 2008 in Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel #1. The character was created by Kevin Grevioux and Mat Brome, and has many powers including superhuman strength, speed, and mental perception.

"I think I would make a dope #bluemarvel @kevinfeige @marvel @marvelstudios. As my mother would say #manifesting LOL. #starwars #jedi #kelleranbeq #prequels #themarvels #jarjarbinks #themandalorian illustration by @dieselfunk," Best shared on Instagram. You can check out the post below:

Ahmed Best Recalls "Lowest Point" After Playing Jar Jar Binks:

Recently, Best spoke with The Guardian about his Star Wars history and his appearance on the new podcast, The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks. Best has spoken before about contemplating suicide, and during the interview, he recalled the moment he stood on the Brooklyn Bridge as he thought about taking his own life.

"I'll show all of you. I'll show you what you're doing to me. And when I'm gone, then you'll feel exactly what I went through," the actor remembered thinking. "It was terrible," Best explained. "It was the lowest I've been in my life," he added, saying he struggled to leave his home at the time.

Best added of getting to save Grogu in The Mandalorian, "It really felt good ... As an artist, I lost my confidence for so many years, but The Mandalorian gave me that affirmation of 'You were always doing the right thing ... It wasn't you.'"

Will Ahmed Best Ever Play Jar Jar Binks Again?

Despite the Jar Jar Binks backlash, Best has said he'd be open to playing the Gungan again. "I would return as #jarjarbinks but it really depends on the story," the actor tweeted when a fan asked about a possible return back in 2020. Some fans thought he might pop up in Obi-Wan Kenobi last year, but it did not end up happening.

"Not as far as I know, no. I haven't been asked," Best shared with Jamie Stangroom's YouTube channel about being involved in the Ewan McGregor-led series. "I just don't know. To be completely honest I think Jar Jar is something Lucasfilm are trying to move away from, I'm not going to hold my breath for a Jar Jar cameo in Obi-Wan but you know, who knows."

Ahsoka: New Video Shows Hayden Christensen Discussing Anakin Skywalker's Return https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/ahsoka-season-finale-new-video-hayden-christensen-anakin-skywalker-star-wars-return/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 23:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 3a37352f-535b-4ab2-b037-917995a59202

Star Wars: Ahsoka came to an end earlier this month, and it teased a lot of excitement for the future. Last year, Star Wars prequels star Hayden Christensen returned to the role of Anakin Skywalker in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and he came back again this year in Ahsoka. Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) encounters Anakin in the World Between Worlds and he's seen again when Ahsoka watches him in an old training video. The series then ends with Anakin's Force Ghost watching over his former padawan. Since the finale, the official social media accounts for Star Wars have been sharing videos of actors breaking down their characters. The latest features Christensen talking about his latest return to the franchise.

"I was blown away," Christensen said of reading the Ahsoka scripts. "I was thrilled to come back and do more with this character, and to get to work with these people that I really admired." The actor goes on to thank fans and reveal how "special" it has been to be a part of the franchise. You can check out the video in the post below:

Will Ahsoka Get a Season 2?

Last week, Deadline reported that "Ahsoka Season 2 is more of a reality in the conversation, though nothing is locked yet." Considering Ahsoka's ties with The Mandalorian and showrunner Dave Filoni's future film plans, it's pretty likely we'll be seeing the Ahsoka characters again. Before the SAG strike, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka) while she was promoting her new film, Haunted Mansion, and we asked if she knew anything about Filoni's film and whether or not she would be in it.

"No. I'm just so happy he got it," Dawson shared when asked if she knew about the project. "Honestly, my uncle is a comic book artist. That is not the average transition coming from animation and going into directing, and especially a film. For all the nerds, I think for the cons and stuff, this is just like, 'Ah!' kind of status. So, I'm just super stoked for him because it really could not happen to a better person. He's so talented and remarkable and awesome, and I love him. And I think what he learned in doing in animation, he's blowing out of the water in directing and live action. So, I'm, as a fan, excited to watch that movie, whether I'm in it or not."

She added, "And I hope I'm invited to set, regardless."

Stay tuned for more updates about Ahsoka.

Ewan McGregor Supports Actors' Strike at New York Comic Con https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/ewan-mcgregor-supports-actors-strike-at-new-york-comic-con/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 22:51:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a86fb299-ab98-4eac-b7ab-31730a5d8e58

New York Comic Con kicked off today, and some major stars are in attendance despite the SAG strike, which is expected to get extended. Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor had a spotlight panel at NYCC, marking his first time at the con. According to the NYCC site, actors in attendance are able to participate in autographs and photo ops, but celebrity guests who appear in struck properties are only able to sign personal headshots rather than images of them as their characters. As for the panels, actors are not able to "talk about past, current or upcoming projects from struck properties and studios." However, they can "discuss their backgrounds in film and TV, their personal hobbies, and their work outside of their film/TV careers." During McGregor's panel, the actor spoke in support of the SAG strike.

"This is the first thing like this I've done and it's been a decision to do it, but I really wanted to take part," McGregor explained. "And it's difficult for us to be up here and not be allowed to talk about our actual films I'm sure you would want to hear about, and so I apologize for that. But we - that's just the way we have to do it I suppose. But it was important to come and see you all meet you all and be part of this relationship, you know, between the people we make the films for and, and the people that make them so yeah, so I'm happy to be here."

Will Ewan McGregor Play Obi-Wan Kenobi Again?

Despite Obi-Wan Kenobi being billed as a one-season limited series, McGregor is hopeful he might return to the character. "I was so happy to do it again, and so happy to work with Hayden again," McGregor said during a virtual conversation on the Disney Studios Awards website before the SAG strike. "I hope we get the chance to do it again."

"In the old days, I would joke about, 'There must be a good story to tell between Episode III and VI.' But, it's true. I always felt that there was," McGregor said. "I feel like [series director] Deborah Chow found it and absolutely nailed it ... just found the story that we wanted to see between the last one that we did and first that was done in [1977]."

Stay tuned for more updates from NYCC.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's BD Droids Come to Life at Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-jedi-survivors-bd-droids-come-to-life-at-disneylands-galaxys-edge/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 18:09:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 0a5033a8-ee9a-4d88-a72b-b9cf432d9a26

The fun at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge continues to expand at Disneyland, as today saw the park testing some BD droids that will be able to roam the park, as made popular in the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor video game. In video footage, courtesy of Disneyland News Today, these droids look just as adorable in the real world as they look in the video game, and while it's unclear what their future will be at the park, seeing them walking around the Black Spire Outpost has us excited that we could start to encounter them at Galaxy's Edge in the near future.

The outlet noted that the droids are currently only being referred to by their colors, as opposed to having official names. In Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, audiences spend the most time with BD-1.

Galaxy's Edge fans have had the chance to encounter other droids at the attraction, but especially with there being so many astromech droids in the style of R2-D2 seen rolling around, watching these pint-sized droids trotting around on legs as opposed to wheels is quite the sight to see.

These BD droids aren't the only recent additions to Galaxy's Edge, as the debut of the live-action Star Wars: Ahsoka TV series has seen a number of figures from that program also making appearances at Galaxy's Edge. In recent weeks, fans have spotted Ahsoka Tano appearing at Galaxy's Edge, allowing fans of the character that debuted in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and returned for Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian, and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett to meet the Jedi.

Another fan-favorite character from animated projects, Rebels' Hera Syndulla, also recently started appearing at Galaxy's Edge, having made her live-action debut in Ahsoka. Often joining Hera at Galaxy's Edge is Chopper, the temperamental droid who similarly made a live-action debut in Ahsoka.

The debut of these droids helps showcase the sprawling nature of the galaxy far, far away and the various opportunities Galaxy's Edge has to create a sprawling and immersive experience. In the lightsaber-building experience, for example, fans have been able to incorporate lightsaber elements from Rebels' Ezra Bridger and Jedi: Survivor's Cal Kestis's weapons.

Stay tuned for updates on Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures Releases New Trailer https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-young-jedi-adventures-releases-new-trailer/ Thu, 12 Oct 2023 17:58:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak d420eecb-0e39-44c4-9a0a-42ace8929f5d

The Disney Junior series Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures debuted on Disney+ on May 4th with seven episodes, and another six episodes were released in August with the tease of a Life Day special coming in November. The animated series is aimed at younger audiences and is set 200 years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace during the High Republic era. The show "follows Jedi younglings as they study the ways of the Force, explore the galaxy, help citizens and creatures in need, and learn valuable skills needed to become Jedi along the way." Today, the franchise shared a trailer for the first season's newest batch of upcoming episodes, including "Life Day."

"On November 8, the adventure continues with new episodes of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures on Disney Junior and Disney+," Star Wars captioned the new trailer. You can check it out below:

When the Life Day special was announced, StarWars.com described the episode as follows: "Kai, Lys, and Nubs, along with Masters Yoda and Zia, on a trip to Kashyyyk to celebrate and learn more about the Wookiees' holiday traditions. In addition, even more episodes of Young Jedi Adventures Season 1 are confirmed for 2024."

What Is Life Day in Star Wars?

The Star Wars Holiday Special was released in 1978 and became instantly infamous. The TV special is considered the worst thing to ever come out of the franchise, but it did include some big moments such as the introduction of the fan-favorite character, Boba Fett. The special saw Han and Chewbacca visiting the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate their biggest holiday, "Life Day." While the holiday special may not have turned out to be everything George Lucas had hoped, Life Day has lived on.

What Age Range Is Young Jedi Adventures For?

"Star Wars transcends generations; fans of all ages deeply connect with its imaginative worlds, mythic stories, and unique characters," James Waugh, Young Jedi Adventures' executive producer and senior vice president, Franchise Content & Strategy at Lucasfilm previously explained. "When developing Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, the first Star Wars series created for preschoolers, the creative team never stopped thinking about how this show may be a youngling's first step into a larger world, and their first time experiencing the limitless potential of the Star Wars galaxy. The show's characters, tone, and the life lessons woven throughout each episode were written just for them, and our talented team was committed to honoring the cinematic legacy while staying true to the expectations of parents for the youngest of audiences."

Young Jedi Adventures returns on November 8th.

Ahsoka: Watch Barbie Star Ariana Greenblatt Talk About Her Star Wars Debut https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/ahsoka-watch-barbie-star-ariana-greenblatt-talk-about-her-star-wars-debut/ Wed, 11 Oct 2023 22:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 9a8dcb18-0dcc-43ab-9be9-b910e226781e

After rising to fame as Sasha in Barbie earlier this year, Ariana Greenblatt made a surprise appearance in the fifth episode of Star Wars: Ahsoka as a young version of the titular character. The younger version of Ahsoka Tano was originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein in Star Wars: Clone Wars, who went on to voice an older version of the character in Star Wars Rebels. Now, older Ahsoka is played by Rosario Dawson in live-action. The fifth episode of Ahsoka marked the first time the character had been seen young in live-action, and it made fans realize Ahsoka was just a kid when she was fighting the war during her Jedi training. Today, the official social media accounts for Star Wars shared a video of Greenblatt talking about embodying Ahsoka and channeling Dawson's performance.

"ariana_greenblatt a stan for #TheCloneWars? she's just like me #Ahsoka now streaming on @DisneyPlus. (Previously recorded.)," Star Wars shared on Instagram. "I watched a ton of Clone Wars episodes," Greenblatt explains in the video. "I mean, when I was getting ready for rehearsal, it was just always on in the background."

Greenblatt goes on to explain that although she is portraying younger Ahsoka, the character still has her adult mind after encountering Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) in the World Between Worlds. "So I had to combine the characters," Greenblatt explained of younger and older Ahsoka. You can watch Greebblatt talk about visiting Dawson on set in the video below:

Did you enjoy the Ahsoka finale? Would you like to see Ariana Greenblatt play young Ahsoka again? Tell us in the comments!

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Razor Crest UCS LEGO Set Is On Sale For Prime Day Round 2 https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-the-mandalorian-razor-crest-ucs-lego-deal-prime-day-2023/ Wed, 11 Oct 2023 19:32:00 +0000 Sean Fallon be18eae0-aa94-4dd4-861b-e3b08a680a5e

If you felt bad when the Razor Crest was blown up in Season 2 of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, we have good news. You can rebuild it in painstaking detail with the Star Wars 75331 Razor Crest set. This Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) release includes 6,187 pieces, which makes it third biggest in the LEGO Star Wars lineup behind the UCS 75192 Millennium Falcon (7,541 pieces) and 75313 UCS AT-AT (6,785 pieces). Overall, it ranks as the seventh biggest LEGO set of all-time, and your chance to score a very rare deal on it is happening right here on Amazon where it is priced at $479.99. That's 20% off the $600 list price and an all-time low.

Note that the LEGO Star Wars UCS Luke Skywalker's Landspeeder 75341 set is also 20% off for Prime Day, and you can grab it here on Amazon while the deal lasts. While you're at it, make sure to check out the brand new UCS 75367 Star Wars Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser that launched earlier this month with 5,374 pieces.

When complete, the 75331 Razor Crest LEGO set will measure over 28-inches long, which makes it roughly 2.5 times larger than the previously released 75292 Razor Crest set (1023 pieces). Features include removable engines and a cockpit, an escape pod, and a minifigure-sized carbon-freezing chamber. Speaking of minifigures, the set includes Grogu, the Mandalorian, Mythrol, and Kuiil on a buildable Blurrg model. You can take a closer look in the gallery below.

I know that fans of the Star Wars galaxy, builders and more will love recreating their favourite adventures from this extraordinary series".

Guillermo Del Toro Talks Scrapped Star Wars Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/guillermo-del-toro-cancelled-star-wars-movie-jabba-the-hutt/ Mon, 09 Oct 2023 16:55:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo c7e994b1-0843-4e5e-b34e-31a548f0eb43

Not so long ago in a galaxy not so far, far away, Guillermo del Toro developed a scrapped Star Wars spin-off about Jabba the Hutt. After screenwriter David S. Goyer revealed he wrote an unproduced Star Wars movie for Del Toro, the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water filmmaker confirmed he developed his Star Wars story "MANY, MANY moons ago" and tweeted a hint: "J and BB." In a new interview with Collider for the 10th anniversary of 2013's Pacific Rim, Del Toro confirmed the project was about the "rise and fall" of Tatooine's resident crime lord.

"We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy. We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it's not my property, it's not my money, and then it's one of those 30 screenplays that goes away," Del Toro said. "Sometimes I'm bitter, sometimes I'm not. I always turn to my team and say, 'Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. We learned.' You can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there's something to be learned from it. So, you know, I trust the universe, I do. When something doesn't happen, I go, 'Why?' I try to have a dialogue with myself. 'Why didn't it happen?' And the more you swim upstream with the universe, the less you're gonna realize where you're going."

The Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy filmmaker -- who next resurrects Frankenstein's monster in his adaptation of Frankenstein -- didn't explain why Disney's Lucasfilm didn't move forward with the Jabba the Hutt movie. After spin-offs Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lucasfilm scrapped plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett feature films that eventually made it to Disney+ as live-action series.

"It was just a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. It's a cool script," Goyer said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about Del Toro's Star Wars movie, adding: "It's a cool story. There's a lot of cool artwork of it that was produced."

Star Wars has been on a theatrical hiatus since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker concluded the nine-episode Skywalker Saga in 2019. At Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced three new Star Wars movies from directors James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Dave Filoni (Star Wars: Ahsoka), and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel).

New Star Wars Video Game Collection Revealed for Nintendo Switch https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/star-wars-heritage-pack-physical-release-nintendo-switch/ Mon, 09 Oct 2023 03:30:00 +0000 Marc Deschamps 2955edda-0678-4451-be13-cba904ad23bb

Over the last few years, a number of classic Star Wars games have been brought to Nintendo Switch by Aspyr. Seven remasters have released on the eShop in total, where they've been available for purchase separately, or recently as part of a bundle known as the Star Wars: Heritage Pack. On December 8th, the Heritage Pack will be coming to retailers as part of a physical release that will cost $59.99. The Pack will include the following seven games:

  • Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
  • Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
  • Star Wars Episode I: Racer
  • Star Wars: Republic Commando
  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Of those seven games, five will be on the physical cartridge itself. Unfortunately, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords will both require a download. Pre-orders for the compilation have already opened. Readers interested in pre-ordering Star Wars: Heritage Pack can do so from Best Buy right here, or from Target right here. Those that aren't as interested in physical games can also find the collection right now on the Nintendo Switch eShop.

Best Star Wars Game Ever

For those unfamiliar with the games in Star Wars: Heritage Pack, several have become fan favorites through the decades. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in particular is often considered one of the best Star Wars games ever made. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is a very big fan of the game, having called it his personal favorite piece of Star Wars media overall. Gunn is hardly the only person to express this opinion, as fans have been singing the RPG's praises since it first released on the original Xbox back in 2003. For those that have never had a chance to experience Knights of the Old Republic, the Heritage Pack is the perfect opportunity to do so!

Star Wars Legends

At one point, the games in the Star Wars: Heritage Pack were considered part of official continuity, but that changed following Disney's purchase of the franchise. As such, these games are now considered part of the Star Wars Legends branding. While the stories themselves might not fit into current Star Wars continuity, elements from some of these games have lived on in various ways, just as Legends characters like Thrawn have gone on to appear in shows like Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed introduced players to Starkiller, an apprentice of Darth Vader. While Starkiller has yet to appear in Disney's Star Wars, the character's helmet did make a background appearance in Andor.

Are you planning to pick-up Star Wars: Heritage Pack when it releases later this year? What's your favorite Star Wars video game? Share your thoughts with me directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp or on Instagram at @Dachampgaming!

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew New Plot Details Reportedly Revealed https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/star-wars-skeleton-crew-details-synopsis-revealed/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 22:20:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt c63f5ae6-d992-4b96-9e1b-d53715904df9

Now that the first season of Ahsoka has now been released in its entirety, the next thing up for Lucasfilm's Star Wars brand is Skeleton Crew. The series was initially pitched as a series tonally similar to films like The Goonies or Stand By Me, but set in a galaxy far, far away--a notion now confirmed by the studio's first copyright filing. According to the filing, a group of four kids make a discovery that's both strange and dangerous, and that effectively serves as the crux of the series.

"In the first episode of the Skeleton Crew we are introduced to four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet and get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy," the new synopsis reads. "Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies, will be a great adventure than they ever imagined."

Will Skeleton Crew crossover with The Mandalorian and Ahsoka?

The filing also confirms Jon Watts directed the pilot episode, with the primary cast members being Jude Law, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Robert Timothy Smith, Ravi Cavot-Conyers, Kyrianna Kratter.

It's expected Skeleton Crew will take place in the same part of the timeline as Lucasfilm's other Star Wars shows on Disney+, with The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau previously suggesting the characters from the serious popping up in other projects around the same time.

"To have this young, Amblin-feeling movie with young people, who grew up in the Star Wars world and are exposed to adventure," Favreau shared of Skeleton Crew during a conversation for Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. "The puppets, the costumes, the visuals, the world that's being expanded upon. And now I get to write the next season of Mandalorian with all these new characters and new locations and new creatures ... There's this cohesive group of stories that are being told thanks to all these filmmakers that are contributing."

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is expected to premiere on Disney+ at a later date. If you haven't checked out Disney+ yet and you want to give it a go, you can do that here.

Shawna Trpcic, The Mandalorian & Ahsoka Costume Designer, Dead at 56 https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/shawna-trpcic-mandalorian-ahsoka-costume-designer-dead/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 01:01:00 +0000 Spencer Perry ba5b064c-3d7f-4227-9555-6ed587ae5561

Shawna Trpcic, an Emmy-nominated costume designer whose credits include The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, has passed away. News of her passing came via the Costume Designers Guild, who posted the following message on X (formerly Twitter): "With great sadness, we inform you that multiple Emmy-nominated and CDG Award-winning costume designer Shawna Trpcic has passed away unexpectedly. Shawna was one of Hollywood's pre-eminent science fiction costume designers - a creative force, a trusted collaborator, and all-around delightful person for her friends and colleagues." Lucasfilm eulogized Trpcic in a post on the official StarWars.com website. In a statement, her Mandalorian and Ahsoka collaborators Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau paid tribute to her, writing:

"Shawna had a deep love and appreciation for Star Wars," said Filoni. "You can see that in every piece of work she did with us. She loved everything about being a part of these stories, including connecting with fans and being a part of that community. I feel like she has always been a part of Star Wars. Her costumes tell a story, providing the suggestion of a life experience that happened before the cameras rolled. I loved collaborating with Shawna, and I will miss her presence."

"Her creativity brought this world to life," Favreau added. "She will be deeply missed both as a friend and as a colleague."

Though fans know her work from the recent Star Wars shows on Disney+, Shawna Trpcic's work as a costume designer began in the 1990s working as a costume designer on several feature films. In 1993 she would make her first mark on fan culture, serving as the costume designer for the first forty episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. From there she would collabrate on several other fan-favorite shows, working as the costume designer for hit shows like Firefly, Angel, Dollhouse, and Torchwood, plus movies like The Cabin in the Woods and Much Ado About Nothing.

In 2020, Trpcic would join the crew for The Mandalorian, working as the costume designer for seasons 2 and 3 of the hit Star Wars TV series. She would go on to work as the costume designer for The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka as well. Trpcic was previously nominated for a Primetime Emmy for her work on The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett. The most recent Primetime Emmy Awards nominated her again, this time for her work on The Mandalorian Season 3.

A GoFundMe in memory of Shawna has also made its way online, organized by costumer Elissa Alcala, who collaborated with Shawna Trpcic on The Book of Boba Fett

ComicBook Nation: Loki Season 2 Premiere & Exorcist: Believer Review https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-2-spoilers-wwe-fastlane-predictions-exorcist-believer-ending-box-office/ Sat, 07 Oct 2023 00:52:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw f1024580-96be-4b13-a269-c7041da14fe5

The Exorcist: Believer Review

In his 2-star review of Exorcist: Believer, ComicBook Nation host Kofi Outlaw said the following:

Exorcist: Believer captures the "legacy" of the original in name only - even after dragging the original film star Ellen Burstyn back into the franchise... an unbalanced mess of a story, that doesn't ever seem to know where to put its focus... The Exorcist: Believer feels like it will go down as an odd and misguided attempt at a direct sequel - one that fails to provide any new soul to the franchise...

Loki Season 2 Review

loki-season-2-time-slipping-ruin-season-1-ending-alternate-timeline.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

In her Loki Season 2 review, ComicBook.com's Nicole Drum said the following:

Loki may be one of the MCU's most innovative and significant offerings, and Season 2 of the series certainly maintains the spirit of the first season and pushes not only Loki's story but the future of the MCU forward. But like the Sacred Timeline itself, Loki Season 2 shows signs of coming apart in places with little bits that could stand refinement, reconsideration, or even just a strong bit of editing. Season 2 definitely doesn't suffer from some of the pitfalls that would make people continue to question if superhero fatigue is real or not, but through characterizations, pacing, and too much self-awareness, it definitely feels like a very different show. It's by no means bad, but it certainly feels like most of the fun will be in digesting each episode after the fact, rather than taking it in for what it is just while watching.

Ahsoka: Watch Mary Elizabeth Winstead Breaks Down Hera Syndulla https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/ahsoka-watch-mary-elizabeth-winstead-breaks-down-hera-syndulla/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 22:00:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak c47161b8-8bac-4539-bc59-c7f3389b8833

The final episode of Star Wars: Ahsoka's first season was released on Disney+ this week, and it set up a lot of excitement for the future. Fans of the franchise ended up loving the show and its ties to the animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. One animated character that was brought to life in live-action during Ahsoka was Hera Syndulla, who is played by Scott Pilgrim and Birds of Prey star, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Today, Star Wars took to social media to share a behind-the-scenes video of Winstead breaking down her character.

"Space mother is mothering," Star Wars captioned in the post. "Oh my god, I'm in Star Wars," Winstead excitedly proclaims in the video. She goes on to talk about Hera, calling her the "ultimate space mom" and explaining how she's a "mother figure" to everyone in her life, including her own son, Jacen (Evan Whitten). You can check out the video below:

"Having a character who's already existed and has such a rich history on something like Rebels, as an actor, it's incredible," Winstead explained in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly's Dagobah Dispatch podcast. "Because sometimes we're tasked with creating our own backstories or trying to flesh out a character that doesn't really have that much on the page. And so to play a character that has season after season of storylines and complex histories with everyone in their life and relationships and experiences was really something I've never experienced quite like that... To have Rebels to refer to, and to have [Rebels and Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni] to speak to about it every day on set, was a real luxury for sure."

Will Ahsoka Get a Season 2?

This week, Deadline reported that "Ahsoka Season 2 is more of a reality in the conversation, though nothing is locked yet." Considering Ahsoka's ties with The Mandalorian and showrunner Dave Filoni's future film plans, it's pretty likely we'll be seeing the Ahsoka characters again.

Star Wars Teases a Fight Between C-3PO and Darth Vader https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-preview-teases-darth-vader-c3po-fight-dark-droids-3-comic/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 21:02:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 2830d11a-156e-4088-9c24-4dd6ab7d71b4 Star Wars is teasing an epic duel between two of the most unlikely opponents to face one another: Darth Vader and C-3PO!

If you're wondering how Star Wars' anxious protocol droid stands a chance against one of the most powerful Jedi/Sith Lords ever, the answer can be found in the current "Dark Droids" crossover event that's taking place in Star Wars comics. Dark Droids has introduced the threat of "The Scourge," a machine entity born from the union of the ancient AI tech known as the Spark Eternal, and a deadly droid the Sith once locked away in a prison realm that exists outside of time and space. Once it became self-aware, The Scourge set out on a dark mission: to conquer the galaxy and establish its own version of peace and order. To do that, Scourge has started corrupting and possessing every droid it comes into contact with - the Imperial droids, Rebel droids, and every machine in between those two warring factions.

star-wars-dark-droids-3-preview.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

After conversing with Luke Skywalker, The Scourge came to the realization that cyborg beings are the key link between helping take control of the power behind all organic life: The Force. Scourge used its widespread vision across multiple bodies to identify the perfect being to corrupt: Darth Vader, a cybernetic being who is also one of the most powerful Force wielders in the galaxy. Scourge made its play to get Vader (whose Force powers were disrupted by Scourge's "birth") but failed - but that doesn't mean the plan has changed...

Early on in Dark Droids, it was revealed that C-3PO is one of the droids that The Scourge corrupted. Well, in the new preview for Dark Droids #3, we find Scourge piloting 3PO to Castle Vadar on planet Mustafar. The AI reflects on the immense danger of the mission and the likelihood that C-3PO and other droids on site will die in the attempt. That danger doesn't stop Scourge, who jumps fully into C-3PO's body and prepares to face Vader.

dark-droids-3-preview-c3po-vs-darth-vader-fight-duel.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

Obviously, no one is really expecting C-3PO to take on Darth Vader in a direct confrontation or duel - that would be over all too quickly. Instead, the real threat of The Scourge is its corruption of tech; C-3PO could make its way into Castle Vader and corrupt its systems, turning Vader's lair into a Saw-style trap. That would definitely be an issue worth reading...

The Dark Droids event is currently unfolding in various Star Wars comic books released by Marvel.

Exorcist's David Gordon Green Addresses Star Wars Rumors, "I'd Never Say No" https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-david-gordon-green-movie-reaction-lucasfilm-explained-interest/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 20:11:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 1cc1600b-6b37-4cea-bb05-e8c2bcf92118

After already reviving the Halloween franchise with financial success, and director David Gordon Green having just debuted his first installment of a planned trilogy of The Exorcist films with The Exorcist: Believer, and having also been attached to a revival of Hellraiser, studios are clearly quite interested in tapping the director for projects in major franchises. One franchise we shouldn't expect him to jump into quite yet is the Star Wars series, as he recently detailed that, while he took meetings at Lucasfilm and has plenty of nostalgic memories connected to the franchise, it was only a tentative consultation about possible stories in the galaxy far, far away.

"I've met with some folks there but there's never been a project or an idea. Those kinds of meetings are fun, and I do know a lot about, at least the old Star Wars movies, and those are really fun and a very strong part of my excitement as a kid watching movies was those movies," Green expressed to the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "I can remember the Chuck E. Cheese tokens, when I was standing in line for `Return of the Jedi, the Wednesday after it was released, and I'm still waiting in a line, my mom went and got tickets early in the morning and I'm there for an eight-o-clock show, and a guy gave me a sh-tload of Chuck E. Cheese tokens and I couldn't decide whether I'm gonna stand in line with the anticipation of this movie or I was gonna go to Chuck E. Cheese and play video games. I just held the bag of tokens, filled my pockets, and went the next week."

He added, "The reality is, again, the mechanism, I think, might look at me too skeptically. Like anything, there's executives that want to know who's out there and what they're thinking. 'Hey, he's dusted off a Halloween franchise,' or, 'He's working on an Exorcist franchise, I wonder if he's got something creative to bring to the table.' But my impulses are always pretty eccentric."

Green's forays into the world of horror might be relatively straightforward, but that's not to say that they've all been expected experiences, with the director going on to express that whatever story he would conjure up for Star Wars would likely be outside of the studio's expectations.

The director confirmed to the podcast, "I would be very curious, too, of where that would go. But, I don't know, I would never say 'no' because every time I say 'never' is when I get the phone call that makes me excited about something, but I've learned those lessons."

The Exorcist: Believer is out now in theaters. While Lucasfilm has announced multiple feature-film projects, it's currently unclear which will be the first to move forward.

Star Wars Movies to Begin Airing on Disney's Networks This Month https://comicbook.com/movies/news/star-wars-movies-disney-networks-october-2023/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 15:17:00 +0000 Timothy Adams f32b0411-7672-4e19-975a-50188f7a8eb1

The entire slate of live-action Star Wars movies are finding a new home on Disney's linear TV networks, which include ABC, FX, and Freeform. Subscribers to the Disney+ streaming service already had access to the 11 Star Wars movies, but they've also been available on Warner Bros. Discovery's Turner Networks for regular TV customers. But now Disney gets to bring the beloved Star Wars franchise to its own networks, though they will also remain on the TNets as well. This provides Star Wars fans of all varieties several options to tune in and watch their favorite characters again and again.

The original Star Wars trilogy - A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi - kick off this new era of programming on FX on Saturday, October 7th. Joining them is the animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This movie started what would become a popular run of the Clone Wars animated series, which concluded on Disney+. Many of the Clone Wars characters, along with Star Wars Rebels, have made the transition to live-action on Disney+, including Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker, Bo-Katan Kryze, Cad Bane, Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, and more.

Lucasfilm is planning new Star Wars Movies featuring The Mandalorian and Rey Skywalker

Star Wars Celebration saw the news that Lucasfilm has a plan for Star Wars' big screen future, with the announcement of movies for Rey Skywalker and The Mandalorian Universe. Dave Filoni is set to helm a movie that will follow "the escalating war between the imperials and the fledging New Republic" that culminates the Disney+ shows. As for the Rey Skywalker film, it will find Daisy Ridley's character attempting to build a new Jedi Order after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Some details regarding the Rey Skywalker movie were found over the summer in Production Weekly, which describes the new film as follows: "Set roughly 15 years after Rey's victory over Palpatine and the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The sequel delves into Rey's courageous endeavor to restore the Jedi Order, where she assumes the role of mentor to two promising young students -- a girl and a boy. As their training progresses, it becomes evident the girl possesses extraordinary abilities, destined to emerge as a future leader."

Do you plan on checking out the original Star Wars trilogy this weekend on FX? Let us know in the comments!

Ahsoka Sets Up Thrawn's Plan for the Star Wars Galaxy, and It Includes a Huge Connection to Darth Maul https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/how-star-wars-ahsoka-thrawn-villain-new-republic-movie-heir-empire-explained/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 19:28:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 9bdf160c-2a2e-42f7-872f-c8b86a1f377c

Star Wars: Ahsoka is done, but the series has set up some huge ramifications that will play out in the next few years of Star Wars storytelling.

(SPOILERS) The Ahsoka finale episode "The Jedi, The Witch, and the Warlord" brought a final resolution to the series-long race to locate both Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and young Jedi Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) in the distant galaxy where they were stranded for ten years. It was a serious battle on multiple fronts, and in the end, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) had to make the sacrifice of staying behind on planet Peridea and allowing Ezra to hide in Thrawn's company until he could make it back home.

However, it was one of the final shots of Ahsoka Episode 8 that raised the ominous threat of what Thrawn will do next, as his Imperial Star Destroyer the Chimaera was seen heading down to the planet Dathomir.

What Is Thrawn's Plan for Dathomir?

star-wars-ahsoka-ending-explained-why-thrawn-goes-to-dathomir-nightsisters-magic.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

The final episodes of Ahsoka revealed that Grand Admiral Thrawn used his time on Peridea to ally himself with a power native to the planet: the magic of the Nightsisters and their Great Mothers. The Nightsisters' magic allowed Thrawn to call to his minion, the Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) across galaxies; the Nightsisters' magic allowed Thrawn to operate his armada, gather intelligence, and affect things through magical influence. Most importantly, the Nightsisters' voodoo-style control over the corpses of the deceased has given Thrawn an entire army of "Night Troopers," zombie Stormtroopers who can rise and fight over and over again.

So why does Thrawn need to be on Dathomir?

It's not hard to surmise why Grand Admiral Thrawn's first stop after returning to the Star Wars Galaxy. As stated, Thrawn survived on Peridea by allying himself with the power of the Nightsisters; well, after originally journeying to the Star Wars Universe from Peridea, the Nightsisters and their Nightbrother Zabrak counterparts (like Darth Maul and his brother Savage Opres) made their home on Dathomir, in the Outer Rim Territories.

star-wars-maul-savage-opress.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

The reason the Nightsisters were drawn to Dathomir was due to it being extremely resonant with the dark side of the Force - which is the source energy of the Nightsisters' "magick" power. Now that Thrawn has brought the Great Mothers to the Star Wars Galaxy, it's only natural that they would seek to consolidate their magical power there, which is connected to Dathomir.

As for what the Great Mothers need a reservoir of magic for: The Ahsoka finale confirmed that Thrawn's Night Troopers have been magically endowed (cursed?) by the Nightsisters' magic to rise from the dead; it also seems pretty obvious now that Thrawn's "cargo" were actually coffins. Whether there are Stormtroopers or ancient Peridea warriors in those coffins, there are definitely enough coffins packed in that ship to create a full-fledged zombie army; however, you would also need a whole lot of magical energy to re-animate them all. That amount of magical energy may only exist on Dathomir.

Star Wars: Ahsoka is now streaming on Disney+.

The Creator Includes Surprising Star Wars: Rogue One Cameo of Fan-Favorite Character https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/the-creator-surprising-star-wars-rogue-one-cameo-fan-favorite-character-alan-tudyk-k2so/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 17:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak bd334ebd-6859-46ce-9936-49aaadecab5c

The Creator was released in theaters last week, and the new sci-fi film is the latest to be helmed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards. The Creator stars John David Washington (Tenet) and follows a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. In a recent featurette shared by Star Wars on social media, Edwards talks about which parts of the iconic franchise always resonated with him, and how he was inspired by those ideas when making The Creator. In a recent interview with The Direct, Edwards revealed there's a Rogue One easter egg hidden in The Creator.

"We have an easter egg of K-2SO in the movie as well. But you know, you're gonna have to find that one on your own... It's in there. I can circle it if I'm given the chance," Edwards teased.

Of course, K-2SO is the droid voiced by Alan Tudyk in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Will K-2SO Appear in Andor?

The first season of Star Wars: Andor did not feature the beloved droid from Rogue One, but another KX-series security droid did make an appearance. During an interview with Collider in 2021, Tudyk spoke out about appearing at Disney's D23 announcement of Andor in 2019 and admitted that he was unlikely to show up in the first season of the show. However, fans do expect the droid to appear in the show's second and final season, which will lead right into the events of Rogue One.

"They're shooting it right now, I'm not in it. But, if it stays on the air, stories keep getting told, I'll end up in there," Tudyk explained before Andor's first season. "I'm in all these announcements for the show, and I had suggested at D23 when we announced in the show, that it be called K2 Fast K2 Furious: The Cassian Andor Series and, um, that's not happening, it's called Andor!"

Will Gareth Edwards Return To Star Wars?

ComicBook.com recently spoke to Edwards, and he addressed the idea of returning to Star Wars or joining another franchise.

"I like franchises, obviously, or else I wouldn't have done two of them. So there are things that I would still love to do in that arena," Edwards explained before adding the caveat that he'd still want to use the practical and immersive world-building approaches he did to make The Creator.

"If I got to do them, I only want to do them if I can use this methodology and bring this stamp to it," Edwards shared. "Because you go into a certain factory, it's going to turn out all the other things in the factory. So, it's like trying to escape the factory and just do it this way. If someone was willing to go, 'Okay, here's the IP. Here's the franchise, but go off and do it how you do things.' That would be probably one of the best-case scenarios, I reckon."

The Creator is now playing in theaters.

Ahsoka's Ezra Bridger Actor Finally Breaks Silence on Playing Live-Action Role https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-ezra-actor-eman-esfandi-breaks-silence-role-an-honor/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 15:56:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 0798fe3a-b481-4a59-a716-d0d1bcfd1862

Star Wars: Ahsoka introduced the live-action (and older) version of Star Wars Rebels hero Ezra Bridger - and now the actor playing him is finally getting to break his silence and speak up about the role. Actor Eman Esfandi posted a simple, concise message on Twitter to let fans know how he felt about taking on the role of Ezra, calling it "An honor."

There are a lot of differing opinions on Star Wars: Ahsoka that are being shared now that the series (or at least the first season) is done. However, of all the things fans liked or disliked about showrunner Dave Filoni's live-action take on Star Wars animated lore, Esfandi's performance as Ezra is one that's almost overwhelmingly popular.

Esfandi captured the playful, witty, and noble nature of Ezra's personality while managing to lay in some new brushstrokes that indicate how Ezra has grown and changed in the years he was stranded on Peridea. More than anything, Esfandi captured the particular moment in Ezra's character arc: that of a boy who has been surviving but deep-down desperately wants to go home.

(SPOILERS) The Ahsoka finale episode "The Jedi, The Witch, and The Warlord" ended with Ezra managing to sneak aboard Grand Admiral Thrawn's (Lars Mikkelsen) ship and hitch a ride with the Imperial commander back to his home galaxy. Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) got left behind on Peridea, leaving Ezra as the messenger who sounded the alarm to the New Republic about Thrawn's return.

star-wars-ahsoka-ezra-bridger-actor-eman-esfandi-break-silence-on-role-its-an-honor.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

Ahsoka has now left Ezra in a place to be one of the most pivotal characters in Star Wars lore during the New Republic era. Ezra is a powerful Force user who has clearly been in training for the years he was exiled on Peridea. With his nemesis Thrawn also back, and the ten-year sacrifice required to keep Thrawn out of the Galactic Civil War now invalidated, Ezra has a definite mission ahead of him to help finish the threat of the Empire for good.

On a fan-service level, Ezra getting to interact with the likes of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu, or Luke and Leia Skywalker is something that is now on the top of the list for Star Wars's future. Even from the little taste we got in Ahsoka, it's clear that Eman Esfandi will fit right in with the best of the Star Wars cast.

Ahsoka is now streaming on Disney+.

Star Wars: Unlimited TCG Spark of Rebellion Products, Pricing, and Release Date Unveiled https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/star-wars-unlimited-trading-card-game-spark-of-rebellion-preorder-release-date/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 13:36:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 86f8bc96-fcfb-419e-886b-8c3231fb8c68

After the failure of Star Wars: Destiny, Fantasy Flight Games went back to the drawing board with regard to the Star Wars trading card business and are now set to launch new game entitled Star Wars: Unlimited in collaboration with Lucasfilm. The game will feature heroes, villains, ships, and settings from across the Star Wars galaxy and is described as "a fast-paced, dynamic game that is both easy to learn and strategically deep." The game was announced back in May, and we got an update on some of the products that will launch as part of the Spark of Rebellion set last week. Today, Fantasty Flight Games and Asmodee followed up with an official release date. Everything you need to know can be found below.

Star Wars: Unlimited will include over 200 cards in the first set-Spark of Rebellion-alone, meaning that there will be endless strategic combinations and playstyles that you can utilize in an attempt to destroy your opponent's base before they destroy yours. Fantasy Flight plans to reveal more details about deckbuilding and other nuances of the game in the future, but they have released the teaser trailer above and revealed the following about the overall gameplay:

"Each round consists of you and your opponent alternating back and forth, performing a single action each turn. Almost everything you do in the game is an action, such as playing a card, attacking with a unit, activating an ability, etc. Figuring out which action to use at a given time is a huge part of the game's strategy, and since your opponent can potentially respond to anything you do with their action, each round is dynamic and impossible to predict!"

large-star-wars-unlimited-first-look-card-fan-b8f126e76f.png

"Another strategic element to the game relates to your play area, which is divided into two different arenas: a ground arena and a space arena. Each unit can only be played into one or the other, which means every battle in Star Wars: Unlimited takes place on two separate fronts."

"Some cards are able to affect units in either arena. For example, many leaders-such as Luke Skywalker (Spark of Rebellion 5) and Darth Vader (Spark of Rebellion 10)-have abilities that can affect any unit, regardless of arena. Leaders are powerful cards that can act as a centerpiece to your deck. A typical leader has both an "undeployed" side (where it starts the game) and a "deployed" side, which is also a unit. "

Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee have revealed that Star Wars: Unlimited will be available at major retailers and hobby stores on March 8, 2024. They are shooting for a regular release schedule of three sets per year. Naturally, there will be a focus on high quality artwork and alternate cards for collectors, though FFG is commited to keeping things simple overall. Organized play will also be a bit part of the experience, so look for store-level events to start with the possibility of global play tournament events down the line.

Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee also revealed an overview of three products accompanying the launch of Spark of Rebellion, and the details can be found in the list below. Note that pre-orders for the Spark of Rebellion set were not available at the time of writing, but this article will be updated that information when it becomes available. Stay tuned.

  • Spark of Rebellion Prerelease Box ($29.99): Get a head start with this prelaunch pack featuring 6 Booster Packs, 2 promo cards, quickstart rules, damage counters, a deck building guide, and a deck box. Available starting from a week before launch at most game stores worldwide; check with your local store for prerelease events!
  • Spark of Rebellion Two-Player Starter ($34.99): Kick start your collection with two 50-card pre-built decks alongside official damage counters, quickstart rules, 2 paper playmats, and 2 deck boxes. The 2-Player Starter kit includes exclusive cards not found in Booster Packs.
  • Spark of Rebellion Booster Packs ($4.99): Booster packs contain 16 cards, including Commons, Uncommons, at least one Rare or Legendary card, a leader, a base, and a foil card. Plus, discover special card variants like Hyperspace or Showcase!
  • You can take a closer look at some of the cards right here.

"Ensuring this game was accessible to all players was key for us, so whether you are a casual player, competitor, or collector, there's something for everyone in this game," says Jim Cartwright, Product Strategy Director for Fantasy Flight Games. "Straightforward mechanics are the driving force behind the design. It's clean and concise with no gimmicks - a card game in its purest form."

From the sound of things, FFG is going all in on this project:

"Star Wars: Unlimited is the culmination of FFG's rich history mixed with the celebrated Star Wars brand. As a studio, we are putting unprecedented resources across every department into this game. We could not be more excited to get this out into the world for everyone to experience," says Chris Gerber, Fantasy Flight Games Head of Studio. "We can't wait to show you more."

In the meantime, it's clear that Disney is extremely interested in developing TCGs for their properties, with the ongoing Marvel Champions and the debut of Disney Lorcana.

What Is Star Wars' Life Day?

In the Star Wars galaxy, Life Day is regarded to be a special element of Wookiee tradition, highlighting the important tenets of family, joy, and harmony. As the events of the Star Wars Holiday Special canonized, the event brings together a number of people each year, with the biggest ceremony of all being held at the Tree of Lie on the Wookiee's home planet, Kashyyyk.

More recently, Life Day has been acknowledged in tie-in books, as well as episodes of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures.

What Is the Next Star Wars Movie?

The next Star Wars blockbuster is expected to be the currently-untitled movie from Ms. Marvel director Sharmeed Obaid-Chinoy, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey. Earlier this year, it was revealed that co-writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have both departed the project, with Peaky Blinders' Stephen Knight brought on to rewrite the script. In a recent interview with Yahoo! UK, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided an update on that film, and revealed that it will still be some time before a new version of the script is ready.

"We've been working on that [film] for a few years and all of that feeds in to our overall storytelling," Kennedy explained in a recent interview. "So we've just got to a point now where we've got a wonderful writer in Steven Knight, he's come on board and we're going to see a script probably in the next month and a half that we've been working on for quite a while. So we're getting close."

"There's never a time where something is just instantly suggested," Kennedy added. "It's such an evolution of conversations that we have all the time and we knew coming off of The Rise of Skywalker that we needed to take that further. We just didn't know how far out; we didn't know exactly what the story might be - but now we have a much better idea."

Justin Timberlake and Lance Bass Were Jealous of Other *NSYNC Members' Star Wars Appearance https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/justin-timberlake-and-lance-bass-were-jealous-of-other-nsync-members-star-wars-appearance/ Thu, 05 Oct 2023 03:34:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 3aad1acc-dd57-4e5f-aaf4-4d504085081d

NSYNC reunited for the first time in 10 years at this year's MTV VMAs to much celebration, and that was followed by the reveal of their first song together in over 20 years. That song is titled Better Place and appears on the soundtrack to Trolls Band Together, and to promote the song, the group has been making the media rounds. That includes appearing on Hot Ones, where host Sean Evans asked the group to confirm whether or not they had almost appeared in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. It turns out that was true, but only Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, and Joey Fatone were cast, and Justin Timberlake and Lance Bass revealed they were jealous when they found out.

Evans asked, "Was it true that NSYNC was cast as Jedi Warriors in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones?" "We were the three," Kirkpatrick said. Chasez added, "A few of us, yeah." Timberlake remembers getting the call that the other three were in the film, saying, "I think I remember us getting the call like 'you're never going to believe what happened. We are Stormtroopers... no Jedis." "We had to learn a bit of sword choreography," Chasez said.

"Me and Lance were so butt hurt," Timberlake said, with Bass adding "Yeah but they got cut out anyways so." Timberlake said, "When you guys got cut out we were like (laughs)". The group laughed, and then Fatone said, "The dumbest thing though is that as we were doing these scenes, you are going 'voom' 'voom' like an idiot." Kirkpatrick wishes they had the video, saying, "I wish they had video, they had the video of us somewhere, well I'm sure they do because they filmed it."

"I've asked Richard McCallum, the producer Richard McCallum, where's the footage and I know he has it so let's get that footage please because I want to see it," Fatone said. Bass then said, "Well didn't the Star Wars fans go crazy when they edited that out? They did not like that."

While the Star Wars roles didn't work out, the group is now back together at least for the time being to promote their song Better Place. In an interview with Yahoo, Fatone said the reunion happened pretty organically. "Justin came up to us about the idea and ... it only fit right for us to do this together as a group. I think the message, the meaning, everything just all around, came to him," Fatone said.

"Because you got to really think about it, too, that he's the youngest one of the group. In general though, think about it this way: He is at the top pinnacle of his career, for many years now," Fatone said. "There's nothing wrong with that. Nobody's upset about that. We all love it and we all support it. But when you're going to go backwards... do you think you want to go backwards? If you go back, would you want to split it four ways with other people again, or do your business that you built up yourself?"

Fatone also addressed the group breaking up after their third album and how he felt at the time. "I was not blindsided by the breakup; I was more blindsided as far as him coming out with music and not knowing that he was going to go and do an actual album/tour thing," Fatone explains. "It was more of, 'Hey, I'm going to do some music, and then we'll get back together.' That's what that was. And it wasn't him - it was the record company. If it was him, then I'd understand it. When you're younger, you think it's that person. But then you look at the whole bigger scheme of things, and you go, 'Oh, that's why I wasn't there for that.' That's the business. OK, I get it."

What do you want to see happen next for NSYNC? Let us know in the comments and as always you can talk all things Star Wars and music with me on Threads @mattaguilarcb!

Star Wars: Ahsoka's Owl Appearance Explained https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-ending-explained-white-owl-morai-meaning-mortis-daughter/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 21:23:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 064ef010-4100-46a3-a758-16583623d6c5

Star Wars: Ahsoka has come to an end, but the finale episode left quite a few fans with more questions than answers. One of the biggest questions that a lot of fans ended up being left with was what was up with that mysterious bird that Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) spots watching over her on planet Peridea? Well, if you've followed Ahsoka's journey throughout Star Wars lore, you should already know how crucial the owl is to Ahsoka Tano's story. If you're a more mainstream Star Wars fan who is still getting to know the character, allow us to break it down for you.

Ahsoka Tano's White Owl Explained: Light of the Daughter

One of the most pivotal story arcs of Star Wars: The Clone Wars was the Mortis Arc. That story saw Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan Kenobi drawn to the otherworldly realm of Planet Mortis, where they met "The Ones" - aka a family of three incredibly powerful Force users known as "The Daughter," "The Son," and "The Father." While all three beings were deeply attuned to the Force, they each manifested those abilities in distinctly different ways: The Daughter harnessed the benevolent power of the light side; the son relished in the destructive power of the dark side, while The Father used his love and wisdom to balance his children's conflicting powers. The gods of Mortis hoped to use Anakin, The Chosen One, as their new avatar - but the Father and Son could not agree on how to do so.

The conflict of the Mortis Arc saw the Son corrupt Ahsoka and make her his puppet in battling Anakin and Obi-Wan, while the Son tried to kill the Father using the mystical Dagger of Mortis. During the fight, the Son ended his hold on Ahsoka by snuffing out her lifeforce; however, when the Son accidentally killed his own sister with the dagger, she had the Father and Anakin transfer her remaining Force power into Ahsoka's body, restoring her life.

Ever since Ahsoka's first "rebirth" in the Mortis Arc, she's been followed by "Morai," a female convor bird that was thought to either be a spiritual companion of the Daughter or a manifestation of the goddess-like being in animal form. Morai has appeared at key moments of Ahsoka's life and journey, as a signifier that the Daughter (or the light of the Force) is still watching over her. It marks Ahsoka as something more significant than just a mere Jedi: she's an avatar of the light of the Force - especially now as "Ahsoka the White," following her near-death experience in the World Between Worlds.

Morai's appearance on Peridea is a signal to Ahsoka (as it is to Baylan Skoll) that the power of The Ones is present on the pivotal ancient world - which could mean some big developments for the next chapter of her story - and possibly a way back to her own galaxy.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 Status Revealed https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/star-wars-ahsoka-season-2-development-status-disney-plus/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 19:33:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 77eee364-366b-4094-a261-cafb05ea6c1e

Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 is already sparking discussions over at Lucasfilm. As Season 1 ended yesterday, fans were wondering if Ahsoka Tano would get another set of adventures on Disney+. Deadline reports that "Ahsoka Season 2 is more of a reality in the conversation, though nothing is locked yet." So, a bit of uncertainty, but clearly leaning towards more of Rosario Dawson's heroine in the coming months. Dave Filoni is the man behind Star Wars: Ahsoka and it seems like this show really built out what he's trying to do with his corner of the mythos. Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger are back and that means people want to see more.

Adding to all of this intrigue is the obvious fact that Filoni has a Star Wars movie on the ledger for the future. You would think that some of the crumbs he's laying down now would lead toward whatever he's planning with that. (His movie is speculated to have deep ties to the origins of the Jedi and we got some lore nods from Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels throughout these episodes on Disney+.) Even more immediately though, Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are in a tight spot and going to need to get back into the action somehow. Season 2 would be the easiest way to get them back into the fold.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Brings So Much Star Wars Rebels Into Live-Action

Star Wars: Ahsoka is the latest edition of the Dave Filoni corner of the franchise. It's been breathtaking to watch the creative put his stamp on Star Wars. There was some concern earlier this year that Star Wars: Ahsoka might be too reliant on Star Wars Rebels for newcomer fans. Well, Filoni told Collider that the animated series would be an extra treat for longtime fans, and the people coming into the Disney+ show for the first time would be able to find their footing.

"I would start, probably like the episode 'Jedi Knight,' where the sad thing happens to Kanan," Filoni said when asked about specific Rebels to watch. "Even if you didn't understand what that was, it would propel you forward. If you just watched Season 4, you'd be set. You can start with that and you get that these Rebels are fighting this tyrannical Empire and that would get you everything and everybody you need. You don't need to do the entire gamut of Rebels, but you should. Once you watch that, you'll be like 'Well, I'm gonna watch it all.'"

He would go-on, "I've been very aware when writing these things that you don't need to have seen any of it; not that I don't want you to, I want you to, but you don't have to."

What Did Ahsoka Do In The New Series?

Fan-favorite Star Wars hero Ahsoka Tano returns in the brand new series on Disney+. Rosario Dawson stars in Star Wars: Ahsoka, which premiered on August 22nd on the streamer. The series picks up after the events of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, in which we saw the former Jedi searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and helping Luke Skywalker train Grogu.

Ahsoka will be joined on her new mission alongside longtime allies Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as they attempt to track down Thrawn, who was last seen disappearing to the far reaches of space after a confrontation with Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). Star Wars: Ahsoka is the latest live-action series from Lucasfilm's creative duo of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.

Ahsoka: What Was Baylan Skoll's Plan for the Star Wars Universe? https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-ending-what-is-baylan-skoll-plan-explained-morits-father/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 18:57:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 209acc22-e6c5-4444-84e0-aa22c9135057

Early on Star Wars: Ahsoka hooked a lot of viewers with one big mystery: what was Baylan Skoll's (Ray Stevenson) plan to break cycle of the Jedi vs The Sith, theEmpire, or whatever dark side manifested to rival the light? Unfortunately, the answer to that mystery wasn't fully revealed by the time Ahsoka's finale reached its end - but there were some big clues as to where Baylan's storyline could be headed.

Here's everything we know about Balyan Skoll's plan to disrupt the cycle of conflict in the Star Wars Universe.

The backend of Ahsoka took us to another galaxy outside the main Star Wars Universe, and the Peridea, which is located there. Peridea turned out to be the ancestral home of the Nightsisters of Dathomir and the Dathomirian race, as well as their ruler Kujet. The full scope of that revelation won't be explored until additional stories of the New Republic Era and Grand Admiral Thrawn's plot to rebuild the Empire get told; however, it's clear that the Nightsister, Dathomir, and Peridea are all being repositioned as much more important figures in the Star Wars franchise.

Theory: Baylan's Plan Is to Become A New Mortis God

star-wars-ahsoka-what-is-baylan-skoll-plan-explained-mortis-gods-the-father.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

Ahsoka Episode 8: "The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord" included just one final epilogue scene of Baylan Skoll, as he made a discovery about the power he sensed deep within Peridea. That power was represented by a massive set of statues carved in the likeness of The Ones - aka the Mortis gods. That family of powerful Force users - The Father, The Son, and The Daughter - influenced the Force from their mystical realm within the Force, Mortis. The Daughter drew her power from the light side of the Force, while the son drew his power from the dark side. The Son and the Daughter remained immortal so long as The Father existed to maintain a balance between them. It was rumored in legend that origins of the Force and its users started with Mortis and The Ones.

Clone Wars had a story arc set on Mortis, where Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi were drawn to Mortis, and encountered The Ones. It was Anakin's presence and role as "The Chosen One" that disrupted the balance of the Mortis gods and the Force; The Father wanted Anakin to replace him, and become the new maintainer of balance between the light and dark side of The Force; instead, The Son corrupted Anakin, sparking his fall to the dark side much earlier (until The Father erased his memory). Ultimately, Anakin's presence and the disruption it caused ended the lives of the Mortis gods. However, it was implied that Ahsoka left Mortis linked to The Daughter (through a white owl that follows her), while The Son set Anakin's fall to the dark side in motion. The Father's death was implied to be a spiritual event that would eventually cause The Force to fall out of balance (when Anakin becomes Vader and the dark side reigns for years).

star-wars-ahsoka-what-is-baylan-skoll-plan-explained-mortis-gods-the-father.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

The implication from the ending of Ahsoka's finale is that Baylan Skoll is being guided by the power of The Ones, much like Anakin Skywalker was. The Father and The Son are the only two statues still intact, indicating that Baylan could end up becoming a vessel for one or both of those entities - or is being led toward some purer, singular power of the Force (the starry sky beyond the valley). If Baylan gains the power of The Father, he could theoretically master control of both the light and dark sides of the Force - and their influence on the galaxy. That would take Baylan Skoll from a fan-favorite henchman to a game-changing antagonist of the Star Wars franchise (whoever plays him after the late Ray Stevenson).

We previously broke down how the legend of the Mortis gods - and their experience with Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Wars - was shaping Ahsoka's storyline. Now it's clear that Ahsoka and Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni is weaving the Mortis Gods into the backstory of the Nightsisters while setting up some potential big twists in future stories of Star Wars Force users.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon Rating Revealed https://comicbook.com/movies/news/zack-snyders-rebel-moon-rating-revealed/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 18:38:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1d7a3e38-1464-421d-bc5e-dd82d107a16e

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, Zack Snyder's upcoming, Star Wars-inspired film, has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association. Rumors have long held that Netflix wanted a PG-13 version of the movie, but that they are open to the possibility of an extended, R-rated director's cut to be release separately, not unlike what ultimately happened with Justice League. The movie was reportedly Rated PG-13 "for strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material and partial nudity."

Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, AnthonyHopkins, Ed Skrein, and more. It's Snyder's next big franchise following the success of his original zombie project Army of the Dead, also at Netflix.

"This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan," Snyder said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter when the film was announced. "It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out."

The movie started out as an epic, single-movie monster, and was subdivided into two films, titled A Child of Fire and The Scargiver. After the experience of Justice League, Snyder has reportedly worked out a deal whereby he will be allowed to release a director's cut that will be as long and strange as he wants it to be, while still providing Netflix with a version that's a little easier for casual audiences to swallow.

Rebel Moon is set in a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand the Tyrant.

Eric Newman, who produced Snyder's take on Dawn of the Dead in 2004, will produce this film, too. Ironically, Snyder's Dawn of the Dead was written by James Gunn, whose Guardians of the Galaxy generated dozens of think-pieces linking him to, and eventually asking him about, new Star Wars that might be in his future. For Gunn, the idea didn't hold any appeal, as he said he would rather create stories from the ground up...which is kind of what Snyder is now doing.

Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire is set for release on Netflix on December 22.

Ahsoka Gives Us the Star Wars Rebels Reunion We've All Been Waiting For https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/star-wars-ahsoka-rebels-ezra-hera-chopper-reunion/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 15:13:00 +0000 Aaron Perine b820af00-e8b8-4c75-a670-e6a52a26dd58

Star Wars: Ahsoka delivered the Star Wars Rebels reunion that fans had been waiting to see. Episode 8 brought Ezra Bridger back to Hera Syndulla and Chopper late in the finale. Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren and Ezra were giving chase to prevent Grand Admiral Thrawn from escaping Peridea. Now, they didn't succeed in that moment. But, Ezra did manage to hitch a ride back home with Thrawn and that had Star Wars fans excited online. Back in the galaxy we all know and love, Hera Syndulla and Chopper go out to greet a mysterious shuttle. When a trooper steps off, the other crew members on their ship are weary. But, the droid and Hera both recognize Ezra almost immediately. The boy is finally home after so much time away.

Now, there's still a lot to be done. Ezra is going to have to warn everyone that Thrawn escaped just like him. There's also the fact that Ahsoka and Sabine are still just kind of stuck on Peridea for the time being. Both master and apprentice aren't alone though, as their allies are helping them get by. All of that is nice enough, but Baylan Skoll and Shin Hate are going to reappear at some point for their rematches with the Jedi. Skoll in particular seems to be angling from some power from the Mortis gods. That's probably going to spell some trouble for Ahsoka and company if there's a Season 2. So, the series really left things wide open for where the story can go next.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Brings Rebels Back

Star Wars Rebels fans might feel like Ahsoka is a bit of a culmination of that animated series. While the looming plot threads indeed dangle, there's a sense of happiness at Ezra finally getting to see Hera, Chopper, and Sabine again. His story was always going to continue, just like Ahsoka has a ways to go herself. Series creator Dave FIloni talked about the idea of his stories and how they fit into larger narratives in the Star Wars canon. He told Empire Magazine that as one door closes, another one opens.

"Culmination is an interesting word," Filoni said earlier this year. "The way I look at it, there are [small] stories, and then there's the big story of the day, too. A New Hope, [The Empire Strikes Back], and Return of the Jedi tell the important parts of the tale that really define the history of the period. There are all kinds of sub-stories underneath that. We've been building all these small stories."

Ahsoka: Fan-Favorite Star Wars Character Finally Gets Her Jedi Moment https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/ahsoka-star-wars-finale-sabine-jedi-moment/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 14:06:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 6e40fda6-a3ad-4e33-96ba-49ab72f13a90

The season finale of Star Wars: Ahsoka concluded in shocking fashion, but one of the many surprises came when a fan-favorite character finally unleashed their Jedi powers. While Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano is the lead in Ahsoka, the Disney+ original series also delivered the live-action debuts of her Star Wars Rebels co-stars Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla. Sabine was a Jedi apprentice under Ahsoka, but their training never fully completed. Star Wars fans got to see Sabine pick back up her training and wield Ezra Bridger's lightsaber, but Ahsoka's season finale proved just how far Sabine has progressed as a Jedi.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Episode 8 of Star Wars: Ahsoka, "The Jedi, The Witch, and The Warlord". Continue reading at your own risk!

How Ahsoka's Season Finale Showed Off Sabine's Jedi Powers

Sabine Wren, Ahsoka, and Ezra Bridger were tasked with stopping Grand Admiral Thrawn from escaping his exile and terrorizing the universe once again, bringing a possible end to the New Republic. Of course, there were many obstacles in their way, including Thrawn's Night Troopers and Morgan Elsbeth, who was officially converted into a Nightsister complete with the Gift of Shadows and the Blade of Talzin.

While Ahsoka battled Morgan, Sabine and Ezra hurried to board Thrawn's ship while it was departing his huge stronghold. This is where Sabine told Ezra to run and jump onto the ship, with her giving extra support by lifting him through the air using the Force. This is one of the first times we've seen Sabine really use the Force in this capacity. Earlier on in the episode, she was also able to summon her lightsaber to help her defeat a Night Trooper who had gotten the upper hand on her.

What's Next For Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra?

The Ahsoka finale ended on a somewhat somber note, with not only Grand Admiral Thrawn getting his wish to escape his exile, but stranding Ahsoka and Sabine behind. However, Ezra was able to hide aboard Thrawn's ship and reunite with Hera, so there were some happy moments after all. Also, Ahsoka took to her new surroundings quickly, even getting a visit from her signature owl, letting her know that everything will be alright in the end. Anakin Skywalker's Force Ghost also showed up for one last appearance.

What lies next for our characters remains to be seen. Thrawn and the Nightsisters were last seen heading to Dathomir, Ezra is back to fight alongside Hera, and Ahsoka and Sabine are relegated to traveling with the Noti. It could all be leading up to the eventual Mandalorian Universe movie that Dave Filoni is helming.

Star Wars: Ahsoka's Ending Explained: Baylan Skoll and the Gods of Mortis https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-episode-8-ending-explained-baylan-skoll-mortis-gods/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 14:01:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 3855350d-c396-4d63-a736-8a975769034f

Star Wars: Ahsoka concluded on Tuesday night with the debut of its eighth episode, "The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord." The episode didn't bring much resolution to the series' plots. Yes, Ezra Bridger made it home, but Thrawn's threat now looms while Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren are stuck in the next galaxy over. Even less resolved is Baylan Skoll's role in the how. Midway through the series, Baylan abandoned his apprentice, Shin Hati, to embark on an unexplained quest, apparently heeding some call. Anyone hoping that the Ahsoka finale would illuminate Baylan's motivations more fully is likely to be disappointed.

However, there are some clues, and they reference one of Star Wars canon's most divisive story arcs and its characters. It seems that Baylan Skoll is following the footsteps of the Gods of Mortis.

mortis-gods.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

What is Mortis?

The Mortis gods were introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars' third season in a trio of episodes titled "Overlords," "Altar of Mortis," and "Ghost of Mortis." In the episode, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano are lured into Wild Space by a Jedi distress call and end up on the mysterious planet of Mortis.

But Mortis is more than a planet. It's a spiritual realm that exists outside of physical space. The world could not be found voluntarily or charted. Its landscape changes regularly, reshaping itself based on the time of day. Mortis primarily existed in myth, legend, and old tales, but some believe it to be the place from which the Force originates and a conduit for its power throughout the galaxy.

Who are the Mortis gods?

Upon arriving on Mortis, Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka met a trio of extremely powerful Force-users called the Ones. The Ones presented as a family unit, with the elder called the Father and his two children being the Son and the Daughter. These beings seem to be of the Force, its avatars, the Son representing the dark side, the Daughter the light, and the Father trying to keep the balance between them.

The Father had lured the Jedi to Mortis because he was dying and needed to find a replacement to keep the balance between his children after his death. The Daughter is loyal and eager to follow the Father's wishes, but the Son seeks to usurp the Father and escape Mortis to wreak havoc across the galaxy.

The Father chose Anakin Skywalker to take his place

Aware of the prophecy of the chosen one, The Father sought Anakin Skywalker to take his place on Mortis. The Father tested Anakin's skills, determining that he was the Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. In The Father's view, that meant remaining on Mortis to keep the Son and the Daughter in check.

Anakin refused to stay on Mortis. The Son sought to corrupt Anakin and use him to escape, going as far as to show Anakin a vision of his future deeds as Darth Vader. But Anakin remained firm. The Son then possessed Ahsoka Tano and had her attack Anakin. The following events led to the death of the Father, the Son, and Ahsoka. Anakin revived Ahsoka by channeling the Daughter's life force into his padawan. The three Jedi then left Mortis behind.

How does Mortis relate to the Star Wars: Ahsoka finale?

The Ahsoka finale alludes to Mortis several times. First, there's the appearance of Morai, the convor (an owl-like bird) with white plumage who had a connection with the Daughter. Since Anakin used the Daughter's life to resurrect Ahsoka, Morai has seemed to follow Ahsoka, appearing at vital moments in the ronin Jedi's life. She previously hovered in the air in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars finale, in the aftermath of Darth Vader's fall and the execution of Order 66, as Ahsoka fled into hiding. Here, she appears in the sky as Ahsoka comes to accept that, in being left behind in this strange new galaxy, she is where she needs to be.

Then there's Baylan Skoll. We last see Baylan looking out onto a vast landscape. He stands on the arm of a statue carved in the image of the Father, the sculpture pointing the way forward. Behind the Father is a statue of the Son and another of the Daughter, though the Daughter's head is missing. Whatever Baylan is searching for, it seems to be related to Mortis and the Ones.

What does this mean for the future of Star Wars?

Star Wars has never reckoned with the Mortis arc of The Clone Wars or concretely defined its or the Ones' place in the mythology of the Force, leading to confusion about the Force's nature. It has long stood out from the rest of Star Wars: The Clone Wars for its heady, spiritual, philosophical nature compared to the rest of the show, which dealt much more with the actual war and serialized adventure.

However, Dave Filoni has never really forgotten Mortis, even if it has been only subtly referenced. The statues Baylan finds aren't the first visages of the Ones to appear in one of Filoni's Star Wars shows. A mural of the Father, Son, and Daughter had been created to hide the entrance to The World Between Worlds that Ezra Bridger discovered at the Jedi Temple on Lothal, suggesting some connection between The World Between Worlds and Mortis that hasn't been explored yet.

Could Baylan be seeking an entrance to The World Between Worlds or Mortis? For someone who seems interested in breaking the cycle of the light side battling the dark side, finding the supposed source of the Force would be a logical goal. Might we be seeing the creation of a new version of The Ones' family, either literally or symbolically, with Baylan hoping to take the Father's role while Shin Hati and Ahsoka become Son and Daughter, respectively? We still don't know much about Filoni's plans leading into his Star Wars movie. With no news about a possible second season of Ahsoka, fans will no doubt be waiting impatiently to find out.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Features Another Major Anakin Skywalker in Key Moment https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-features-another-major-anakin-skywalker-in-key-moment/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 04:05:00 +0000 Spencer Perry 6c673da1-e2c5-48bc-b649-e9e663f41d37

Star Wars: Ahsoka was long rumored to feature a reunion between Ahsoka and her master, Anakin Skywalker, as played by Hayden Christensen. Fans finally got that moment very early on with the conclusion of Episode 4. At the end of that episode, Ahsoka found herself in the world between worlds, confronted by Anakin's Force ghost. Tano and Skywalker duel in the next episode, showing off some flashbacks to The Clone Wars-era of their relationship. Hayden Christensen would then return to the role of Anakin in a new way, appearing as a recording from The Clone Wars-era of Star Wars in a message he prepared for Ahsoka, and now in the final, Anakin has appeared again. Spoilers for the Ahsoka finale will follow!

In the final moments of the Ahsoka finale, Ahsoka and Sabine find themselves back on the planet Peridea, living amongst the tiny hermit crab people, the Noti. For a brief moment, now having displayed Force abilities herself, Sabine looks out to the distance away from the village, as if she can sense something. She turns back and walks toward their new home, convinced it was nothing. Afterward however Ahsoka herself takes a look and smiles before turning around to follow her padawan. As she walks away we see in the distance there was something after all, Anakin Skywalker's Force Ghost.

This moment brings things full circle not only for Ahsoka, but also adds some depth to Anakin's story, even though he's dead at this point in the Star Wars timeline. Now having found his own peace, as noted by his ability to manifest as a Force Ghost after helping Luke defeat The Emperor, Anakin finally got to see his apprentice not only achieve her own greatness but also pass on what she had learned to an apprentice of her own. It's a moment that marks immense pride for his character, and seemingly brings everything for him full circle, potentially writing off future appearances by Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker

Star Wars: Will There Be an Ahsoka Season 2 on Disney+? https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/star-wars-ahsoka-season-2-details/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 02:55:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt dd13dcb9-614e-4054-bd3d-abbad5e57daf

The first season of Ahsoka has come to a close, ending on a pretty sizable cliffhanger. Though we know the show will inevitably lead to Dave Filoni's untitled Star Wars movie eventually, most fans are hoping the series will be renewed for a second batch of episodes.

Unfortunately for those hoping to get a second season of the show, it's unclear if Lucasfilm has immediate plans for a potential sophomore outing.

Is there going to be an Ahsoka Season 2?

Lucasfilm has neither confirmed nor denied a second season of Ahsoka will happen. In fact, Rosario Dawson said earlier this year she's unsure if something like a renewal is within the realm of possibility.

"If more comes next, I'd be really excited and grateful," Dawson shared. "I feel like every time I get to step into her shoes, I learn more. I experience what I could never experience otherwise, and I feel like I keep getting better."

Though little has been unveiled about Filoni's movie, the filmmaker has said the picture will effectively serve as the "culmination" of the Star Wars shows found on Disney+.

"Culmination is an interesting word," Filoni shared with Empire Magazine in May.

Keep reading to discover the highlights of Star Wars: Ahsoka's eighth episode.

Obviously, spoilers for Episode 8 of Star Wars: Ahsoka, "The Jedi, The Witch, and The Warlord", below! Only look if you want to know!

What Happens in Star Wars: Ahsoka's Season Finale?

The cargo transfer for Thrawn's ship is complete, and he prepares to make the jump. Morgan gets rewarded by the Great Mothers for her work on the mission with the Gift of Shadows and the Blade of Talzin, which allow her to operate as a proper Nightsister.

The Noti transport Ezra, Sabine, Ahsoka, and Huyang across the planet. Ezra and Huyang bicker about lightsaber building, and Ezra is surprised to learn that Huyang taught Kanan. Huyang provides Ezra with the proper tool to ignite his Lightsaber, and catches him up on the dynamic between Ahsoka and Sabine. Sabine apologizes to Ahsoka about abandoning her, but Ahsoka takes it in stride and insists that she'll stick by her. Thrawn's TIE fighters attack their convoy, and Ahsoka's ship gets crashed in the ensuing fight. Ahsoka insists that they can still escape, and they ride off on Howlers, leaving Huyang behind to repair the ship with the Noti.

Thrawn learns that the ship was knocked down, and orders a defense strike once Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra arrive on their Howlers. They escape through the rain of fire unscathed, and enter Thrawn's fortress, fighting off his troopers -- but the Great Mothers use their magic to reanimate the troopers soon after. The fight ensues, and Sabine eventually uses her own lightsaber to help save Ezra. They are eventually cornered by Morgan and the Blade of Talzin, who Ahsoka fights alone while Sabine and try to get closer to Thrawn.

Thrawn and the Great Mothers board the ship, which has set its coordinates to begin hyperjump -- leaving everyone else behind. Sabine and Ezra get to the dock. Ahsoka, meanwhile, gets cornered by Morgan and the zombie troopers. Sabine devises a plan: they use their combined Force abilities to jump onto the ship. While Ezra nearly falls, he successfully makes it aboard. Sabine, seeing that Ahsoka is behind her still fighting Morgan, initially hesitates to jump. The fight with Morgan breaks one of Ahsoka's lightsabers, and Morgan tells Ahsoka she's going to die here alone. Sabine reveals that Ahsoka isn't alone, and joins the fight against Morgan. Ahsoka ultimately slices Morgan's gut open with the Blade of Talzin itself. The Great Mothers announce Morgan's death to Thrawn, who insists she has "done what was required."

Ahsoka and Sabine are attacked by more of Thrawn's artillery, but escape -- with the help of Huyang and the newly-repaired ship, which they land on top of. They fly towards Thrawn's ship, as Thrawn radios in to Ahsoka's ship and taunts her. His ship makes the jump through hyperspace, which knocks Ahsoka's ship nearly off course and back onto the planet. Ahsoka and Sabine reunite with the Noti.

Meanwhile, Shin arrives at the camp of mercenaries, and Baylan stands perched on a gigantic statue of The Father, looking pensively.

Thrawn's ship approaches Dathomir. Ezra -- in a trooper disguise -- arrives at Hera's base, and Chopper immediately recognizes him. Ezra and Hera reunite.

Ahsoka sees an owl, which signifies to her that things are okay. She tells Sabine that it's time to move on, and that they should be content with how things ended up. They both look to the stars, and then return to camp. Anakin's Force ghost watches over them.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Just Gave Us Zombie Stormtroopers in the Craziest Way https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-finale-zombie-stormtroopers-witches-dathomir/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 01:58:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 75c4537b-912d-49e1-b8e1-9cfd11863106

Star Wars: Ahsoka came to an end on Tuesday night, as the finale of the live-action series was released on Disney+. The new episode was easily the most action-packed of the entire series, and also introduced a new, terrifying version of the Stormtroopers that we've known for so many years. An entire horde of undead stormtroopers (named "Night Troopers") appeared in the Ahsoka finale, planting the seeds for other beings in the franchise to be brought back from the dead in the future. WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from the Star Wars: Ahsoka finale! Continue reading at your own risk...

In the finale, the trio of Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra attempt to fight their way onto Grand Admiral Thrawn's ship so they can stop him from taking his army back to their galaxy. They take out an entire room of stormtroopers and things seem to be going just fine. That is until those stormtroopers rise up from the ground, seemingly even stronger than before.

Thrawn and the Witches of Dathomir had a plan in place for Ahsoka and her comrades. After the stormtroopers were killed, the three witches worked some sort of dark magic spell, raising all of the dead back to life.

This undead trooper wave included a couple of Death Troopers, who Sabine and Ezra had to fight. As parts of their masks were ripped away, they were revealed to look like actual zombies, with decaying flesh and aimless groans. Star Wars went all the way in on the zombie concept for this one - as some fans have been speculating for weeks that they would, after the Night Troopers clearly had elements of the Nightsisters in their design. The Star Wars witches have been known to re-animate the dead as zombie warriors - as many suspected was the case for Marrok, Morgan Elsbeth's inquisitor henchman.

There is room for the zombie concept to affect other corners of the Star Wars universe in future projects. The end of the Ahsoka finale saw Thrawn and the witches return to the main galaxy, bringing their magic into the same world as the stories we've seen in other Star Wars titles. This collision of worlds and stories could bring exciting things down the line.

Star Wars: What is the Sword of Talzin? https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-what-is-the-sword-of-talzin-explained/ Wed, 04 Oct 2023 01:49:00 +0000 Spencer Perry cec930f1-b46f-4b28-85bd-40d37e04ed0b

The opening sequence of the Star Wars: Ahsoka series finale brought a major weapon from Star Wars: The Clone Wars into live-action, the blade of Talzin. Previously only seen one time in the animated Clone Wars series, the sword of Talzin is a weapon previously wielded by Mother Talzin, one of the Nightsisters. A weapon created by the green magic from Dathomir, Talzin's blade was previously used by the Nightsister to fight none other than Jedi Master Mace Windu. Though it has the appearance of a regular sword, the magic infused into Talzin's blade gives it the capability to block lightsabers. Spoilers for Star Wars: Ahsoka follow!

In Star Wars: Ahsoka, the Nightsisters manifest Talzin's blade and present it to Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) as a reward for hearing their call and coming to their aid. After she pledges to their sisterhood, and they infuse her with their magic and alter her appearance to appear like their own, they present her with Talzin's sword. As the green flames lick off the blade they prepare to finally face off against Ahsoka, Sabine, and Ezra.

After Morgan Elsbeth is left behind by Thrawn and the Nightsisters, she uses the blade of Talzin in a battle against Ahsoka herself. Their battle naturally carries over across multiple locations, with Ahsoka eventually getting the upperhand. In a slick move, Ahsoka is able to knock the breath out of Morgan Elsbeth and take the blade of Talzin from her grasp. Ahsoka then uses both her own lightsaber and the blade of Talzin to slide open the Nightsister, killing her. The next time that Ahsoka is seen however, the blade of Talzin is nowhere to be found. Perhaps the Nightsisters magic was able to pull it from where it fell, or maybe a simple continuity error resulted in it no longer appearing in the shot.

Star Wars: Ahsoka Easter Egg Ties Series to Jedi: Fallen Order https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-episode-7-easter-eggs-jedi-fallen-order-kujet-zeffo-sith/ Mon, 02 Oct 2023 23:05:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 245130c5-fb05-49d9-b8a4-0ce9b31bb4f9

One Easter egg from Star Wars: Ahsoka Episode 7 was a sneak little reference that ties the live-action TV series to the Star Wars Jedi video game series - specifically its first installment, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Ahsoka's latest episodes took us to another galaxy beyond the Unknown Regions of the universe. It was revealed that Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger ended up on a planet called Peridea, which is the true ancestral home of the Witches of Dathomir - aka the Nightsisters.

The Nightsisters and their lore have been mostly relegated to Star Wars' animated and video game projects - but there have been quite a few breadcrumbs sprinkled around that add up to something of an origin story. Part of the Nightsisters and Dathomir mythos is that of the ruler Kujet, a Force-sensitive of the Zeffonian race who became a Zeffo Sage and practitioner of the dark side. Well, now that Star Wars fans have had a chance to translate some of the Nightsisters' runes found on Peridea, they've spotted this reference to Kujet:

How does Kujet Connect to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order?

(Photo: Respawn Entertainment / Electronic Arts)

One of the missions in the original Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game (2019) took players to the planet Dathomir, while another took them to planet Zeffo. On Dathomir there was a mission objective that took young Jedi Knight Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan) to the Tomb of Kujet to retrieve an ancient Zeffonian Astrium - artifacts (read: MacGuffins) needed to unlock a Zeffo Vault, where a Jedi Master (Eno Cordova) had hidden a master list of Force-sensitive children across the galaxy.

Fallen Order gave us the first look at Kujet - or at least his likeness, preserved in a sarcophagus lid. Ahsoka has kept the continuity consistent, by confirming that Kujet's rule began on Peridea before he extended it to the new kingdom of Dathomir. This adds another layer of importance to Zeffo culture and technology - which has already gotten a special spotlight in Star Wars lore. It also creates new levels of intrigue about the connections between Peridea and Dathomir, as well as the Nightsisters and their Force powers.

Star Wars: Can Ahsoka's Finale Stick the Landing? https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-when-watch-finale-episode-part-8-ending-spoilers-theories/ Mon, 02 Oct 2023 21:47:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 35c3fa32-85f4-4800-90d6-6f81f10dbb1a

Star Wars: Ahsoka is about to premiere its highly-anticipated finale episode, and a lot of fans are understandably wondering whether or not the show can stick the landing on all fronts - or if full resolution is even the plan. Ahsoka Episode 8 will be coming in hot with quite a lot on its to-do list, including all of the following story points:

  1. If/How Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) escapes the new galaxy where he's been marooned and makes it back to the main Star Wars galaxy.
  2. If/How Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Huyang (David Tennant) and former Phoenix Crew members Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) escape the new galaxy and get back to their original galaxy.
  3. A confrontation between Ahsoka, Ezra, Sabine, and Thrawn.
  4. Resolution to the story arcs of Dark Jedi Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno).
  5. A reveal about that ancient game-changing power Baylan has been sensing on planet Peridea, and what it means for the Star Wars franchise.
  6. Resolution of the deeper emotional conflicts between Ahsoka and Sabine, Sabine and Ezra - or all three at once.
  7. Insight into what happens to General Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and the New Republic government, once the threat of Thrawn's return goes from speculatively to undeniably real.
  8. Any final or post-credits surprise cameos from any or all of the Star Wars New Republic Era heroes that will be battling Thrawn in the upcoming New Republic event film that Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni is directing.

Every episode of Ahsoka has been around 40-minutes long; some Star Wars fans and outlets have calculated that the runtime for Ahsoka Part Eight will be around 42-43 minutes long. That doesn't leave a whole lot of extra time for Ahsoka to wrap up all eight of the plotlines mentioned above. It's not impossible, it just seems unlikely.

Does Ahsoka Need to Resolve All Its Storylines?

star-wars-ahsoka-episode-8-finale-spoilers-ending-theories-preview.jpg
(Photo: Lucasfilm)

Ahsoka Episode 8 may be getting unfairly saddled with pressure to do more than it needs to. While exact timelines and plans are unclear, we know that the events of Ahsoka are leading into Filoni's New Republic event film. Star Wars being an ongoing saga in an interconnected franchise universe means that standalone series aren't really a thing anymore. Star Wars: Ahsoka could end with Ahsoka and the Star Wars Rebels characters still stranded on Peridea while only Thrawn makes it back; it could end up giving the heroes a headstart getting back home, with Thrawn still set to follow soon after; or we could get hit with the cliffhanger of no one actually escaping Peridea, leaving Thrawn's return and the immediate battle against him and his forces to serve as the plot of the movie.

That latter scenario could end up being the most beneficial to the larger Star Wars franchise: Thrawn's return as Heir to the Empire can't be too lengthy or significant of an event - otherwise it becomes a (yet another) gaping hole in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy story, which takes place decades later. For instance: Thrawn couldn't have had too much influence over the formation of the First Order, otherwise, it would be annoyingly conspicuous that no one in the cultish fascist group ever mentioned him. It also wouldn't fit to have Thrawn making his bid for power when we also know Emperor Palpatine was still alive and secretly rallying a Sith Cult and The Final Order armada in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy.

In the end, Ahsoka's finale does have one clear responsibility to handle: bringing all of the characters and thematic arcs together to justify why this series is titled "Ahsoka." With all of the Star Wars Rebels influences on the show, fans may not appreciate it if Lady Tano doesn't get the focus she deserves.

Star Wars: Ahsoka's Episode 8 will premiere on Disney+ on Tuesday night.

Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards Breaks Silence on Reshoot Rumors and Tony Gilroy Controversy https://comicbook.com/movies/news/rogue-one-director-gareth-edwards-breaks-silence-on-reshoot-rumors-and-tony-gilroy-controversy/ Mon, 02 Oct 2023 12:54:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 17e7f5fe-a914-47aa-b539-7e97453c850c

With Solo: A Star Wars Story's production being a notorious disaster and Rogue One failing to capture those massive The Force Awakens numbers at the box office, there have been rumors about behind-the-scenes strife for years. In a new interview, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards pushed back against those rumors, which he called "total inaccuracy." One of the biggest rumors -- that Tony Gilroy was brought in to finish the film after Edwards started sparring with Disney -- is something Edwards particularly denies, saying that while Gilroy's input was valuable, he didn't direct the movie, with Edwards handling things all the way up until the Darth Vader stinger.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was distinctive and generated an instant fan base upon its release, becoming kind of the dark horse favorite among Star Wars fans. That reputation has only been enhanced by Andor, the TV spinoff that has drawn rave reviews.

"The stuff that's out there on the internet about what happened on that film - there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing," Edwards said. "Tony [Gilroy] came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the entire last minute of that movie."

"The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene," the filmmaker added. "I did all of that stuff."

In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, "a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel are producing, with John Knoll and Jason McGatlin serving as executive producers."

You can stream the movie now on Disney+. Evans's latest film, The Creator, is now in theaters.
