Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero's 1978 horror classic, is celebrating its 45th anniversary with a return to theaters in time for Halloween, courtesy the folks at Regal Cinemas. The film will screen during a one-night-only event on October 27th. Still widely regarded as one of the best zombie films ever made, Dawn of the Dead picked up where Romero's 1968 Night of the Living Dead left off, with groundbreaking practical effects and a surprising depth for a movie of its type. The rise of zombie movies in the 2000s happened after Zack Snyder remade Dawn of the Dead, suggesting that decades later, it remains influential with filmmakers as well as audiences.

While it didn't share any characters with Romero's Night of the Living Dead, it was a kind of spiritual sequel to that film, and became the primary source of zombie revenue for the filmmaker, due to an oversight on Night that resulted in that film falling into the public domain. Its success paved the way for several more Living Dead movies from Romero (and that public domain status paved the way for the Return of the Living Dead franchise, which he had nothing to do with but which took advantage of the popularity of Dawn of the Dead).

In Dawn of the Dead, after zombies start rising from the dead and taking over a town, a handful of disconnected people all get the same idea: head for the local shopping mall, where there will be supplies, plenty of space, and basically every inch of the building is well-lit and easy to lock down. When zombies swarm the outside of the mall, that leaves the survivors trapped and worried that it's only a matter of time before the undead manage to find a way in.

The movie featured a parody of consumerism that's hard to miss, and given now rarely mainstream horror movies engaged in social critique at the time, the movie raised some eyebrows just by obviously being "about something." Made for a little over $600,000, the movie is notable for bringing together horror legends Romero and Dario Argento, who both purchased the international distribution rights and cut his own version of the film for that market, complete with a progressive rock score unlike the more traditional scoring used by Romero.

While Dawn of the Dead was controversial for its violence and gore, the movie nevertheless went on to earn $66 million worldwide, making it a massive success, particularly relative to its small budget.

You can get tickets to Regal's event here.

Deadpool 3 Director Plays Coy About Possible Taylor Swift Cameo https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-3-director-plays-coy-about-possible-taylor-swift-cameo/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 02:52:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 63b9faaf-ca57-4000-8d9a-fbf689075525

For more than a year, there have been rumors and speculation that Deadpool 3 just might have a cameo appearance straight out of some fans' wildest dreams, the speculation being that Taylor Swift just might appear in the eagerly anticipated film. While the speculation started because fans noticed that Ryan Reynolds' announcement that Hugh Jackman was appearing in the film as Wolverine was filmed in the same house as Swift's All Too Well: The Short Film but recently ramped up when Swift was spotted alongside Reynolds and Jackman, as well as Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy at the recent NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets. But when asked about the possibility that Swift could appear in the film -- presumably as Dazzler -- Levy played coy. Speaking with The Wrap (via Yahoo!) Levy admitted that fans are loud about their desire to see this cameo happen, but he is "no dummy" when it comes to talking about it.

"They sure are loud," Levy said, referring to fans of Swift wanting the superstar to play Dazzler. "I'm going across the board. 'No comment' because that's a double whammy. That's Taylor-related. And it's MCU-related. I'm no dummy. You're going to have to wait and see."

Levy Compared Taylor Swift to Steven Spielberg

While Levy is keeping tight-lipped about a possible Deadpool 3 cameo for Swift, he did have high praise for her. Levy, who previously worked with Swift on All Too Well: The Short Film -- he played Her's (Sadie Sink) father in the film -- compared Swift to Steven Spielberg, calling her a "generational voice and creative force" in the industry.

"Taylor has not consulted me about upcoming directing projects, but I think she has the makings of a hell of a director," Levy revealed, before adding, "Taylor, the depth of her vision for how she wants a creative piece to be, whether it's a lyric, a melody, a bridge, a concert tour, a video -- it's profound. It's profoundly vivid and she has the strength of her convictions. Spielberg was on the set of a movie he produced that I directed, called 'Real Steel,' and I said to him, 'How do you know it's the right shot?' His answer was, 'The way you see it, that makes it right.' I feel like that's something Taylor Swift has figured out really well, because that's about trusting your instinct."

Taylor Swift is Already Dominating the Box Office With The Eras Tour Movie

While fans will just have to wait to see if Swift shows up in Deadpool 3, she is already dominating the box office. Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour movie is finally in theaters and the box office numbers are leaving no doubt that the concert film is the best thing at the party. Not only is the film at the top of the box office and the second-best October opening of all time, but the movie is officially the highest grossing concert film of all time, with its opening weekend take of almost $97 million eclipsing 2011's Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which brought in just $73 million over the course of its entire theatrical run.

"We are grateful to Taylor Swift for allowing us to make [the] concert film accessible to millions of fans in movie theatres around the world," AMC Theatres' Executive Vice President of Worldwide Programming and Chief Content Officer Elizabeth Frank said in a press release.

"Her spectacular performance delighted fans, who dressed up and danced through the film," Frank continued. "With tremendous recommendations and fans buying tickets to see this concert film several times, we anticipate [the] concert film playing to big audiences for weeks to come."

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour is in theaters now.

Deadpool 3 Release Date Gets Disappointing Update From Director https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-3-release-date-disappointing-update-director-shawn-levy/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 01:29:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 5ee12cdf-42f3-4228-9713-6257c72a07c0

The Deadpool franchise is about to turn a new corner, now that the rights to the character have officially moved from 20th Century Fox to Marvel Studios. Deadpool 3 has become a highly-anticipated part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's forthcoming slate, and is (at the time of this writing) scheduled to be released in May of 2024. That release date has been speculated about amid the still-ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike, as production on Deadpool 3 has been stopped for several months now. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy addressed the uncertainty around the film's release date, and confirmed that even he is unsure when the film will debut. Levy did also confirm that, for the time being, he has edited half of the movie based on footage that was already filmed.

"I wish I knew. I don't even know if we officially have [a release date]. I know we were gonna be May 3," Levy revealed. "Certainly, the actors' strike and the long pause in production have put that release date in true risk. We've shot half the movie. I've edited half the movie. We're dying to get back to work and get this movie out next year."

Will Deadpool 3 Get Delayed?

As Levy explained in an interview earlier this fall, Deadpool 3 was halfway through production prior to the strike's work stoppage. Amid the strikes, Marvel Studios also paused production or pre-production on their upcoming films Thunderbolts and Blade, as well as their upcoming Wonder Man Disney+ series.

"Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swaths of it, we are paused. We were halfway through filming Deadpool, co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day, and that chemistry is, I have to say, spoiler alert, it is as relentlessly awesome as we had all hoped it would be," Levy revealed. "But we are halfway through filming, we shut down, our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts our industry and certainly inclusive of our movie back at work."

Who Is in the Cast of Deadpool 3?

Deadpool 3 will star Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson / Deadpool, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, and Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen in currently-unknown roles. Jennifer Garner will be reprising her role as Elektra.

"I think you're giving me too much credit," Reynolds explained in a previous interview with Collider. "I don't believe that I'm responsible for Hugh coming back. I always wanted Hugh to come back. My first meeting with Kevin Feige when Disney bought Fox years ago, maybe three years ago, or three and a half, four years ago, I'm not sure, was about doing a movie with the two of us, a Deadpool Wolverine movie. And that was not possible at the time. And then Hugh just happened to call at that perfect moment and express that he'd be interested in coming back and doing this one more time. And the contents of that conversation, I'll let Hugh, because I know it's only inevitable that you and Hugh are going to speak at some point soon, I'm sure. I'll let Hugh answer that on his own. But he expressed interest in coming back, and then it was my job to take that to Kevin Feige one more time and sell it."

As mentioned above, Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to be released exclusively in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Martin Scorsese Says Latest Movie Is Inspired by Midsommar https://comicbook.com/movies/news/martin-scorsese-killers-of-the-flower-moon-midsommar-inspiration/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 23:49:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 43ce498b-40ee-4eca-98a1-a57e879acd10

Martin Scorsese's latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon opens in theaters on Friday and the massive film -- which has a three hour and twenty-six-minute runtime -- may be based on David Grann's nonfiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, it turns out that aspects of the film take their inspiration from what might be a surprising source: Ari Aster's Midsommar. Scorsese recently explained that when it comes to the film's pacing, he was inspired by Aster's work.

"I very much like the style and pacing of good horror films like Ari Aster's Midsommar or Beau is Afraid," Scorsese said (via Variety). "The pacing of those films goes back to the B films of Val Lewton, Jacques Tourneur's Cat People, or I Walked With a Zombie. Just going a little slower. A little quieter."

He continued, "I was very concerned about allowing scenes that were not narrative into the story, scenes to do with the Osage culture -- leaving in those scenes of custom, like the baby namings, the funerals and the weddings -- so we could begin to understand a little more about the people. I felt confident that a lot of people would allow themselves to immerse in the world of film. One has to take these chances. At this age, what else can I do?"

Is Killers of the Flower Moon Based on a True Story?

As was noted above, Killers of the Flower Moon is based on Grann's nonfiction book about the origins of the FBI, but the film is a little different. Grann's book was set from the point of view of the lead agent on the case, Tom White, but Grann has praise for how Scorsese approached the story.

"I did visit the set for a few days," Grann said in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. "And I was, again, just really impressed by how they managed to bring these historical figures to life and capture the hidden truths about the story. Leo [DiCaprio] just seemed to just be able to capture the nature of Ernest Burkhart, and the level of complicity of his character, and this evil system. And Lily Gladstone brings Mollie to life with such sensitivity and emotional power, at least in the bits I saw."

"What I was struck by from Scorsese to the actors was the level of commitment and how much research they did to understand the parts and understand the history. They just seemed voracious, a little bit like historians, in their search for any knowledge, transcripts, documents, speaking to descendants, speaking with members of the Osage Nation," Grann continued. "The film had Osage-language experts working with the actors to make sure they were able to teach them the language and that they got the language right, technically. I saw a scene where many of the tribal council members of the Osage Nation were speaking, and I think they contributed to a lot of that dialogue themselves. I think anyone who sees that will find it bracing and breathtaking and powerful."

What is Killers of the Flower Moon about?

In Killers of the Flower Moon, members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s, sparking a major FBI investigation directed by a 29-year-old J. Edgar Hoover and former Texas Ranger Tom White, described as "an old-style lawman."

Also starring in Killers of the Flower Moon are Tantoo Cardinal, Louis Cancelmi, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Tatanka Means, Pat Healy, Scott Shepherd, and Gary Basaraba.

Killers of the Flower Moon is set to be released on October 20th.

Deadpool Director Tim Miller Speaks Out on Helming Borderlands Movie's Reshoots for Eli Roth https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/deadpool-director-tim-miller-speaks-out-on-helming-borderlands-movies-reshoots-for-eli-roth/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 23:14:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 97b1964c-bdff-4474-8da0-51b9b3ae1a07

Earlier this year, it was reported that Deadpool director Tim Miller would be stepping in to direct reshoots for Eli Roth's Borderlands movie adaptation, with Miller filling in for the other director due to scheduling conflicts with another film, Thanksgiving. Now, Miller is opening up about helming those reshoots, calling the experiencing both "interesting" and "freeing" while sharing his love for the video game series the film is based on.

"It was an interesting experience to come in and do reshoots on a movie that's not yours," Miller told Collider. "It's a freeing experience where you feel like, I'm just here to help wherever I can. But my main reason, other than, you know, I have a huge affection for the video game industry, I want to see every video game adaptation succeed is, I'll be honest. I wanted to work with Cate Blanchett, and I wanted to work with Kevin [Hart] and Jamie Lee Curtis. And Ariana Greenblatt, the young lady who plays Tiny Tina, is amazing, which everybody knows from the Barbie movie. So, it was a great experience all around. I was feeling a little rusty, so I was happy to get back in the saddle. The movie gets up and moves. It's a good ride."

What is Borderlands About?

Based on the popular video game series of the same name, the Borderlands movie will follow Lilith, an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past as she returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas, the film's antagonist. Along the way, Lilith must team up with a wide cadre of allies, including elite mercenary Roland, pre-teen demolitionist Tiny Tina, mad scientist Tannis, and a wise-ass robot Claptrap to find the missing girl. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Why Was Eli Roth Unable to Direct The Borderlands Reshoots?

While Borderlands is still Roth's film, the director was unable to helm the film's reshoots due to his obligations to another film, Thanksgiving. Roth's Thanksgiving has been a fan-favorite since it premiered as one of the "fake trailers" in 2007's Grindhouse. Thanksgiving is the third of the five fake trailers from Grindhouse to go on to become a real movie, the other two being Machete and Hobo With a Shotgun. In Thanksgiving, "after a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious serial killer known only as John Carver comes to Plymouth, Massachusetts with the intention of creating a Thanksgiving carving board out of the town's inhabitants. Thanksgiving is set to open in theaters on November 17th.

Borderlands is set to open in theaters August 9, 2024.

Dune's Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa to Reunite in New Movie Produced by Martin Scorsese https://comicbook.com/movies/news/dune-oscar-isaac-jason-momoa-reunite-new-movie-produced-martin-scorsese/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 21:18:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson 768cb219-4525-4b4d-892c-cc647a478f56

After sharing the screen in Denis Villeneuve's 2021 blockbuster Dune, Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa are reuniting in a completely different genre. On Monday, reports revealed that Isaac, Momoa, Gal Gadot, and Gerard Butler are set to star in In the Hand of Dante, a new crime film executive produced by Martin Scorsese. The film is expected to be directed by Oscar nominee Julian Schnabel. Production is currently underway in Italy, and has reportedly acquired a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, in order to account for the ongoing actors' strike. In the Hand of Dante is based on Nick Tosches' novel of the same name.

Executive producers on In the Hand of Dante will include Scorsese, Isaac, and Schnabel, alongside DreamCrew, Screen Capital/Screen One and Tribune Pictures. Producers include Jon Kilik, Francesco Melzi d'eril for MeMo Films and Olmo Schnabel for TWIN Productions.

What Is In the Hand of Dante About?

In the Hand of Dante follows the story of the original manuscript for The Divine Comedy emerging in the clutches of a black-market smuggling ring in the dangerous underbelly of New York City, and weary scholar Nick is called by the mob to authenticate it. Overwhelmed by temptation, Nick defies the mafia and steals the manuscript in a frenzied bid to have it all. He follows a dark and violent path from a metaphorical Hell into Paradise with his love Giulietta, while a parallel tale unfolds: the odyssey of Dante himself, a man who is trapped in a loveless marriage with Gemma and bolstered only by his mentorship under an austere intellectual. He escapes to Sicily and creates his greatest work, immortalizing his lost love, Beatrice.

Nick and Dante's timelines weave separate paths, and yet the two men are inextricably linked -- both lose themselves chasing love, beauty and the very promise of the divine.

Who Is in the Cast of Dune: Part Two?

Isaac and Momoa are not confirmed to be returning as Duke Leto Atredies and Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Two, given the fact that both of their characters died in the first Dune film. (Although, as fans of the franchise know, there are ways to bring Duncan Idaho back, if the story gets to it.)

In their places, Dune: Part Two is expected to also see the return of Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atredies, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Javier Bardem as Stilgar. New characters will include Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Christopher Walker playing Emperor Shaddam IV.

What Is Aquaman 2 About?

Later this year, Momoa is set to return to the big screen in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives in theaters on December 20th. In the film, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see the return of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Randall Park as Stephen Shin. Jani Zhao will play new character Stingray, Indya Moore will play Karshon, and Vincent Regan will play Atlan, who was previously portrayed by Graham McTavish in Aquaman. Pilou Asbaek has also joined the cast in a mystery role.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is directed by James Wan, with a script from David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Producers include Wan and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran.

Haunted Mansion Director Opens Up About Film's Poor Reviews https://comicbook.com/horror/news/haunted-mansion-movie-reboot-reaction-explained-reviews-bad-director-justin-simien/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 21:05:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh b5717f09-24cb-457e-a675-96360d75332a

Back in 2003, Disney attempted to deliver audiences an adaptation of their beloved Haunted Mansion ride, with that Eddie Murphy-starring movie not faring well with critics, as it only sits at 13% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. While this year's Haunted Mansion from director Justin Simien performed a little bit better, it still only earned 37% positive reviews, with Simien himself weighing in on those reactions, admitting that while it's a "bummer," his priority was to take audiences on a journey as opposed to aiming for critical accolades. Haunted Mansion is out now on home video and is streaming on Disney+.

"It's a bummer, to be honest. It's a bummer to feel like people don't get something that you're doing, and that you've worked so hard on, but ultimately, it's usually been the other way around," Simien shared with Screen Rant. "Especially with Dear White People coming out of Sundance, where critics loved Dear White People, and audiences eventually loved it. But at first, it was incredibly divisive, and it was incredibly polarizing."

He continued, "So, with this film, it was interesting, I went into it wanting to make a crowd pleaser, and kind of wanting to prove to myself that I could, that I knew how to bring an audience through a story. So, I'm glad that that part of it came to fruition, I'm glad I was able to accomplish that. I don't typically read my own reviews, I learned that lesson a while ago, especially when they're good. But on this one, I read a couple of them, and it felt like, I don't know, I wasn't quite sure what movie they were talking about all the time. It felt like there were some other things going on in those reviews, I gotta say, than just what was happening in the movie, and that kind of thing is just out of your control, you know? I think, if anything, it was actually a really great lesson as a filmmaker, in terms of who you make your movies for, and why you make them, and what your own marker for success is. To me, I'd rather have the audience go on the journey I want them to go on than anything. So, I don't know, the rest is just kind of take it as you get it."

In addition to critical responses being underwhelming, the film's box office fell short of expectations, taking in only $115.8 million worldwide. Likely one reason the film wasn't a major financial success was that it was released in the summer as opposed to in the middle of the spooky season, though back in 1993, Hocus Pocus similarly opened in the summer to a poor box office performance and has since become a cult classic. Rotten Tomatoes notes that the audience score of Haunted Mansion is 84%, so the passing years could see it earning a larger following.

Haunted Mansion is out now on home video and streaming on Disney+.

Encanto Producer Teases What's Next for Disney's New Franchise https://comicbook.com/movies/news/encanto-franchise-future-disney-producer/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:42:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 278be8f3-a047-4a43-8b55-937f657b3e9d

Encanto took the world by storm back in 2021. Not only did Disney's animated adventure find success at both the box office and on Disney+, but its original soundtrack broke records on the music charts. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" found a way to top even Frozen's "Let it Go," helping Encanto to become worldwide sensation for the House of Mouse. Of course, it would only make sense for Encanto to become the company's next big franchise, right?

Though previous Disney CEO Bob Chapek did mention that Encanto was being given the franchise treatment, there hasn't been any official announcement regarding a new movie sequel or TV spinoff. There's little doubt more Encanto will be on the way at some point, but nothing has been revealed just yet. According to Yvette Merino, one of the film's producer, Disney is still working on what exactly "expanding the franchise" looks like for Encanto.

"I think we will continue to work on what that actually means," Merino told The Direct. "But we are so blown away by the reaction and how Encanto kind of connected with so many people. We continue to look at different ways that we can keep the world alive. I know they teased a little bit of destination D23 about something Encanto coming, possibly to one of the parks. And we love that."

As Merino hinted, one of those ways could be through the Disney Parks. Back in September, Walt Disney Imagineering Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn revealed that some big changes were coming to Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park. Vaughn said that the largely defunct Dinoland USA area in Animal Kingdom would be replaced with a "Tropical Americas" area, which would include attractions based on Encanto and Indiana Jones. There wasn't much elaboration beyond that.

Encanto may become a permanent part of Walt Disney World, but there are still other avenues outside of film and television that could also see the continuation of the franchise. Merino specifically mentioned publishing and consumer products as areas of the company where discussions are taking place regarding the Amazing Madrigals.

"We're working closely with our friends in publishing and consumer products to make sure - there's always different ideas and needs and wants for it to stay alive out there," she explained. "But I don't have anything official to say, but I love the Encanto world and can't wait to see it expand across the company."

What do you hope to see from the world of Encanto in the future? Let us know in the comments!

Avengers: Infinity War Finally Reveals Why Hulk Was in Trailers https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/avengers-infinity-war-hulk-trailer-scenes-explained/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:30:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 5cbac24a-ef92-4f8c-b6cc-ab2f4abbad39

Avengers: Infinity War trailers included a moment which has left Marvel fans and detectives online baffled to this day. There is footage of the Hulk running through the trees of Wakanda, charging into battle with several Avengers by his side. After the first sequence of the Avengers: Infinity War, the Hulk did not come back into the movie. In fact, the Hulk was sidelined until he was revealed to have merged with Bruce Banner to become Smart Hulk in Avengers: Endgame during scenes set five years after the events of Infinity War. Now, second unit director and VFX supervisor Dan Deleeuw has revealed why footage with the Hulk in Wakanda existed.

"It's something that, there's stuff that misleads, which I generally haven't been a part of per se, but that one was a giant spoiler, right?" Deleeuw told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview available on Phase Zero. "Because we didn't want to give away Smart Hulk at that point. And, so I think you've probably seen it where there's the scene that we didn't put in where Hulk and Banner are arguing with each other inside the Hulkbuster and then what was originally going to happen is that Hulk was going to come out, and we didn't realize it was Smart Hulk yet, and it was an idea that I think Jeff Ford had on Ultron. There was another scene that it didn't make it in, but the idea was that he thought Tony went to go confront Ultron, and really he had stuck Banner in the Iron Man armor and then Banner Hulks out and started wailing on Ultron. It was such an amazing idea. It's like, 'Oh, we got to put this in.'" They did not, however, end up including such a sequence in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As it turns out, a sequence where Hulk pops out of an Iron Man suit to beat up Ultron almost made its way into Avengers: Infinity War. By the looks of the footage which exists, it seems there may be a version of the film out there where he does. "We used the same idea at the end of Infinity War, but again, it didn't, both times it didn't help the story," Deleeuw admitted. "So, both times it came out and it was like, 'Oh!' It's like, it's such a great gag, but we really didn't have a chance to get it in. So it was kind of, that shot was caught in the confluence between trying to get this really fun idea and also not having Nat, Natasha have to go up the Hulk who just magically turned into Smart Hulk, and then meanwhile, Thanos is wiping everybody out. So it's all story."

Hulk being removed from Wakanda is one of many changes made in efforts to improve land on the perfect stories and moments for the two most recent Avengers movies. Deleeuw made his directorial debut with the second episode of Loki's second season this week. Previously, he worked on the aforementioned Avengers titles as well as Iron Man 3, Captan America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Eternals, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and more.

"It was something that I always wanted to do and it was something that was very fortunate to work with the Russos," Deleeuw said of his first time directing. "They were always really open to ideas and collaboration just by the very nature of those films being so big. And so it was something that they gave me the ability to, we once say, 'Hey, go shoot that. Go shoot that. 'And then it's like Endgame. It's like, Joe's like, 'Well, do the additional photography.' I'm like, 'Okay, that's great.' So it's like you got the experience with that and then branch in the second unit directing and you get experience with that. But it was something that I always kind of approach visual effects from a story point of view. If there wasn't telling a story or if it wasn't servicing the story, then it didn't really, whatever we were designing and a fight sequence or a battle just didn't necessarily be there unless it was too cool not to put in."

Deleeuw's episode of Loki is available now on Disney+. The full interview is available on the Phase Zero channel.

Avengers: Endgame Portals Scene Was Originally Completely Different (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/avengers-endgame-portals-deleted-scene-revealed-mcu/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 20:08:00 +0000 Brandon Davis 5d4a6301-578c-48b8-a936-0a2163ec225c

Avengers: Endgame delivered some of the most iconic moments in cinematic history, with the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga seeing nearly all of its heroes emerge in the rubble of Avengers HQ. Some were already there to fight Thanos but most of them stepped through portals opened by Doctor Strange and Wong, having been revived when the Hulk snapped his fingers to undo the actions of Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War. As it turns out, the famous, "On your left," and moments which followed played out quite differently in the first attempt at creating the unforgettable moment.

Dan Deleeuw, a Marvel VFX supervisor on several projects and now director with Loki's second episode of Season 2, talked with ComicBook.com about his time working on Endgame. "It was interesting because there was a lot of different ideas," Deleeuw revealed. "There was a version of the cut, the day that we had all the actors together, and it was like this long panning shot across all the actors." As it turns out, the portals moments originally were not laid out in a way which gave each character their big return moments.

"It was the day that everyone was there and it was like this giant, expensive in essentiality you had all the actors there, but it just didn't play as well as we wanted," Deleeuw recalled. "And so it was something that I got with pre-viz and Jeff Ford, our editor, and we just said, 'We have to go with the portals and just you picking who comes out when.' It was just something that for I think originally it was like we knew who survived and when they were coming back, but we needed to slow it down and give the audience a chance to welcome their heroes back. And so it was so interesting in terms of like, 'Okay, who comes from Titan first? Okay, you get the Guardians and then Star-Lord's going to show up.' And then just being in the theater that day, it's like starting, okay, we got to do Spider-Man last because Spider-Man!. So it was very much crafted to be emotional, and I think it was amazing for all of us that opening weekend, how well the fans responded to it."

Avengers: Endgame has released several scenes which did not make the cut of its theatrical release which was ultimately a couple minutes longer than three hours. While a sequence with most of the actors together did make the cut of the film, leading to Captain America calling upon the Avengers to assemble, it seems there was a dramatically different version of this sequence. Much like the "I am Iron Man," moment which followed, the crew found what worked best after several tries.

Deleeuw served as second unit director on Avengers: Endgame before going on to make his directorial debut on Loki Season 2. ComicBook.com's full interview with Deleeuw can be found on the Phase Zero channel on YouTube. Loki releases new episodes of Season 2 every Thursday on Disney+.

Taylor Swift Finishes Second to Only Joker for All-Time October Box Office Opening Weekend https://comicbook.com/movies/news/taylor-swift-the-eras-tour-box-office-october-record-joker/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 19:55:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 792bc264-353c-48c3-9a40-f389172e1fb9

Taylor Swift took on the Joker for the October box office record, but the DC villain came in just ahead of the anti-hero. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour debuted in 3,855 theaters over the weekend to $92.8 million in North America and $30.7 million internationally, kicking off Swift's concert film era with $123.5 million at the global box office. The Taylor Swift concert film is now the second-biggest October opening behind only Joker, Warner Bros. and DC's R-rated Batman spin-off that opened to $96 million in 2019.

Swift still topped the box office this weekend, with Swifties powering The Eras Tour to the biggest-ever opening weekend for a concert movie -- more than three times the $31 million of the previous record holder, 2008's Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour -- and has already surpassed the $73 million total of 2011's Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. The "1989" singer scored the seventh-highest opening weekend of the year, and could dethrone the $261 million global haul of 2009's Michael Jackson: This Is It.

Officially described as an immersive, "once-in-a-lifetime concert film experience with a breathtaking, cinematic view of the history-making tour," Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour takes fans on a nearly 3-hour trip through Swift's discography with the exception of some songs cut from the Tour setlist.

Coinciding with the release of her next re-recording album "1989 (Taylor's Version)," out October 27th, all adult tickets are priced at $19.89 (plus tax), while children's and senior tickets cost $13.13 (plus tax) except for branded premium large format screens, which costs nearly $29. The Eras Tour is playing in theaters Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with AMC Theatres securing a 13-week exclusive theatrical run before the concert film eventually lands on streaming.

With Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour boosting moviegoing, the October 12th previews were the start of what Michael O'Leary, CEO of the National Association of Theater Owners, called "another landmark weekend for cinemas."

"This year has been marked by unprecedented experiences for movie lovers in theaters across this nation," O'Leary said in a statement. "The Eras Tour debut proves, yet again, that fans are eager to share other experiences in a communal way, with theater owners working creatively to build memorable moments in their cinemas."

The short, written and directed by Dan Abraham and Trent Correy, features a new version of "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins -- and in fact, Disney brought back songwriter Richard Sherman to be a part of the re-recorded song, which was reportedly a favorite of Walt Disney's.

"Yeah, there were moments [that made us emotional]," producer Yvett Merino said of the short's creation. "I mean throughout, it was really every once in a while we'd just look at each other in the room. I'm like, 'We're doing this.' And really, I think being in Walt's office and recording with Richard Sherman was probably, I don't know, there's a lot of favorite days, but that was a big one for me."

You can see the full short now on Disney+.

R.L. Stine Addresses Future Fear Street Films https://comicbook.com/horror/news/fear-street-movies-future-plans-update-status-r-l-stine-netflix/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 18:07:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 087aa33c-2e6e-4120-a5af-aa2dc3bcb2ad

Back in 2021, Netflix released the ambitious Fear Street trilogy of films, which was exciting not only because of the built-in fan base of the R.L. Stine series of books, but also because the trilogy was filmed in succession and were released only weeks apart to tell a frightening storyline. With Fear Street 1994, Fear Street 1978, and Fear Street 1666 all being largely original stories as opposed to direct adaptations of the source material, there are limitless opportunities to continue the franchise, with Stine himself recently teasing that there are still plans in the works to continue the live-action franchise, despite there not being any official updates.

"I've done everything you can think of and it's all so far beyond what I ever dreamed," Stine recalled to Rolling Stone. "When we started out I said, 'Let's do two or three [Goosebumps books].' I never dreamed that it would last this long. It's all a big surprise to me. I'm excited to have a new TV show going [on Disney+] and we'll probably do more Fear Street movies too, and you know, that's a thrill for me."

Despite Netflix not yet confirming the status of more Fear Street films, this isn't the first update we've gotten about the franchise. Back in the summer of 2022, Bloody Disgusting had reported that Netflix was "very deep" into developing more entries in the series. Later that year, reports claimed that Watcher filmmaker Chloe Okunu was attached to develop a new project in the Fear Street series.

Given that the first trilogy of films was largely developed under a shroud of secrecy, it's no real surprise that any potential projects would similarly be kept relatively secret. Additionally, with this year's writers' and actors' strikes, it's possible that these factors could have seen development on new entries be slowed or paused entirely.

This isn't the first time Stine has hinted that more Fear Street movies could be on the way, with both these most recent and previous remarks implying that Stine isn't always clued in on live-action developments on films inspired by his works.

"There's still talk about more Goosebumps movies, and I also hear rumors about more Fear Street movies for Netflix, because the first ones did so well last summer," Stine revealed to Yahoo! Entertainment last summer. "Those films kind of shocked me, because they were all R-rated, and I've never done anything R-rated! All those teenagers were getting slashed. I was like, 'Suddenly, I have a slasher movie!'"

With a new Goosebumps series having just premiered on Disney+ and Hulu, we likely won't be getting any feature films based on the franchise in the foreseeable future. Stay tuned for updates on the Fear Street franchise.

Monsternado Trailer Released https://comicbook.com/movies/news/monsternado-trailer-released/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 18:01:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 67485935-3ba5-4eee-9fb8-f1dbd4c69459

Uncork'd Entertainment has released the official trailer for Monsternado, a film which "fills a tornado with ALL of the scariest creatures," according to its logline. The movie will sweep onto digital platforms this November, from the filmmaker behind the upcoming Loch Ness Monster movie, also from Uncork'd, the studio behind movies like Antidote and The Dinner Party.

Basically, think of Sharknado, but instead of sharks, there's megalodons, giant squids, kraken, man-eating spiders, and more. All being thrown at a coastal city from waterspouts at speeds of 300 miles per hour.

Studio president Keith Leopard called the movie "another fantastic film from Tyler James, whose The Loch Ness Monster also releases in November," adding, "Monsternado is fun, frightening and brimming with some very cool special effects sequences."

You can see the trailer below.

The film also hails from Jeffrey Scott, an executive producer who worked on the viral hit Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. He recently name-dropped Monsternado while discussing his hopes to break out of the gimmick-horror space and into "serious" filmmaking.

"Because I know that, annoyingly, with this industry it's very much about like, 'Oh, you're the person that did this.' It's not always [about] your ability," Scott recently said. "Which is why I've gone down this route of constantly making films that are 'Winnie the Pooh,' or like, I just shot a film called 'Monsternado.' It's ridiculous stuff. But the end goal - when I finally get where I want to be - is serious filmmaking."

In Monsternado, "a tornado, infested with prehistoric monsters, has formed in the Bermuda Triangle, and is making its way towards land. Megalodon, Pterodactyls, Giant Octopuses, Crocodiles, and more attack - now the city must fight to survive against these deadly creatures."

Monsternado will release on Digital and DVD November 14.

Star Trek Head Confirms Status of Section 31 Movie With Michelle Yeoh https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-section-31-movie-update-michelle-yeoh-behind-it-with-all-power/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 17:40:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b35c76a5-3492-419f-a88a-b1748d315793

Star Trek Universe head Alex Kurtzman is giving fans an update on the Star Trek: Section 31 movie, now that the Writers' Strike is over - including the massive question of whether or not Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh is still involved.

During the Star Trek panel at New York Comic-Con 2023, Kurtzman let fans know that Michelle Yeoh is not only still attached to the Section 31 movie, but she is backing the project "with all her power." That is an important confirmation, as Yeoh's career has hit a new stratosphere after the release of the hit film Everything Everywhere All At Once in 2022. After Yeoh walked away with the Best Actress Oscar this year, there was a lot of buzz that she could be leaving her days in the Star Trek TV Universe behind.

Paramount made a big statement back in Spring, by officially announcing the Star Trek: Section 31 movie (as opposed to the original limited series format) with Yeoh still attached to star. At the time of the movie's announcement, Yeoh put out a statement that indicated her enthusiasm for Section 31 was indeed very high:

"I'm beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I've loved for so long," Yeoh's statement read. "Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that's shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can't wait to share what's in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!"

Domenic DiMeglio, chief marketing officer and head of data at Paramount Streaming added that, "We're thrilled that Star Trek: Section 31 will be the next title in our Star Trek universe. Michelle Yeoh is an incomparable talent - she brought Emperor Georgiou to life in such an incredibly fun and nuanced way that the character immediately became a fan favorite. We're so thrilled to welcome Michelle back to the Star Trek and Paramount+ family and can't wait for fans to see what this special movie event has in store."

What Is Star Trek: Section 31 About?

star-trek-section-31-michelle-yeoh-behind-it-with-all-her-power.jpg
(Photo: Paramount)

Star Trek: Section 31 will be a spinoff movie from the Star Trek: Discovery TV series, which is focused on Star Fleet's Intelligence division, and its covert operations unit that tracks and eliminates extreme threats to Starfleet, using extreme measures.

In Star Trek: Discovery, Michelle Yeo played two versions of Philippa Georgiou from two different timelines. The "Prime" version was a Starfleet captain and mentor to Discovery protagonist Michael Burnham, who died during a mission early in the series. Burnham and her crewmates later encountered a version of Georgiou from the "Terran Universe" where the kindly captain was now the ruthless emperor of the Terran Empire, a war-mongering version of what Starfleet could be. That version of Georgiou was brought back to the Prime Universe, where her killer nature and imperial mind were put to work for Section 31. Last seen, Georgiou had to separate from Burnham and the Discovery crew after they jumped ahead into the 32nd Century, as Georgiou being an anomaly of both time and alternate reality was too much of a strain on temporal balance.

The Star Trek: Section 31 movie will presumably pick up Georgiou's story in the 23rd-century version of Section 31, and examine whether her presence is for the good or ill of the Prime Universe.

Titanic Finally Arrives On 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray https://comicbook.com/movies/news/titanic-finally-arrives-on-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 17:03:00 +0000 Sean Fallon e0bd11f8-69da-46b5-a4fb-55a4db86ec05 psx-20231016-125944.jpg

Released in December of 1997, James Cameron's iconic film Titanic celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, but the party for one of the highest grossing films of all-time rolls on. Today, the film finally arrived on 4K Ultra HD / Digital Blu-ray, and pre-orders are available here at Walmart and here on Amazon now. It's set to arrive on December 5th, which makes it the perfect holiday gift for any fan that remembers how much of a phenomenon this film was back in the day.

Released in 1997, Titanic held the record for the all-time global box office and is currently the fourth-highest-grossing film worldwide behind two other James Cameron films - Avatar and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. Titanic won a record 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction-Set Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Original Dramatic Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects.

The Titanic 4K Blu-ray also features over 15 hours of bonus content, including a new documentary entitled Titanic: Stories from the Heart. Apparently, it will include new interviews with James Cameron, Jon Landau, and Kate Winslet. There will also be a new fan art gallery, 3 audio commentaries, and more.

Now the only question is, will this Titanic superfan ever make the 4K UHD upgrade?

The Titanic Door Debate Rages On

In a recent special Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron, Cameron explores a variety of scenarios that weren't featured in the film, and the director confirmed that had Rose given Jack her lifejacket to help insulate him, he possibly could have survived, but there are "a lot of variables."

Fans initially claimed that the piece of debris Rose floated on had room for Jack to also fit on it, though the special confirms that, thanks to testing with the help of stunt performers, the piece of wood might have been big enough but wouldn't have enough buoyancy to support the both of them to keep them out of the freezing water.

A second test saw the stunt people being able to keep just their upper halves out of the water, which would have kept their vital organs warmer, and while they could have survived for hours, it's unknown if that could have taken them to rescue. However, taking into account the physically exhausting journey the pair experienced to get to that point, it seems unlikely they would have the physical endurance to maintain their strength long enough.

The final test saw Rose give Jack her lifejacket, and with her having on a heavier outfit, it's possible that the pair might have both survived the situation.

"He's stabilized," Cameron shared in a clip from the special. "He got into a place where if we projected that out, he just might've made it until the lifeboat got there. Jack might've lived, but there's a lot of variables. I think his thought process was, 'I'm not going to do one thing that jeopardized her,' and that's 100 percent in character."

Titanic: 25 Years Later With James Cameron is available on Hulu.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Director Teases a Prequel Would Be More Exciting Than a Sequel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/nightmare-before-christmas-prequel-sequel-future-plans-henry-selick/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 16:49:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 9b275114-2850-4980-9a7f-a15e63ed1988

In the 30 years since the release of The Nightmare Before Christmas, its following has grown widespread, leading some fans to hope to get a new entry in the franchise. Director Henry Selick has previously shot down the likelihood of a sequel, given how time-intensive the original project was, though he did recently confirm that, were a new story to be developed in that world, a prequel would be more interesting to him. He also noted that creator of the concept Tim Burton hasn't been particularly excited about possible stories for sequels, so it would ultimately be up to Burton on how to continue the mythology.

While speaking with PEOPLE, Selick noted that the original film is "a perfect movie [that] came out of the perfect time, only to grow into something far bigger over the years." In regards to a sequel, he added, "I think Tim in particular feels like, why mess with that? ... He certainly doesn't need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody's come up with a great idea for a sequel. And I still think that Tim gets to decide. I don't think there's any idea that would convince him."

Part of the appeal of the film, which few other stories have accomplished, is that it is just as popular in the Halloween season as it is in the holiday season, whereas other movies often appeal more to one time of year than the other. Selick teased that seeing the events leading up to the original movie could be intriguing, which would understandably lean more into the spooky side of things.

"It might be more interesting to do a prequel," the director admitted. "There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown."

Whatever the future might hold for the movie, Jack Skellington actor Chris Sarandon would be on board to reprise the role, as he teased of voicing the character again, "To quote Henry, 'F--- yeah.' ... If there were a sequel, I'd be there in a minute."

With Disney's Hocus Pocus taking 30 years to get a follow-up, we can't give up on a new chapter of the story entirely, though if the franchise is continued, it might pivot into a new medium outside of the realm of stop-motion animation.

Stay tuned for updates on the possible future of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Top Gun: The Next Generation Docuseries Announced by National Geographic https://comicbook.com/movies/news/top-gun-the-next-generation-docuseries-national-geographic/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 16:20:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 2299690e-8de0-472b-a0ed-68bb8256bb3f

Top Gun will be the focus of a new documentary series airing on National Geographic. Top Gun: Maverick revitalized the movie franchise, thanks in large part to Tom Cruise's return as Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The film was the winner of the 2022 summer, setting new records at its opening box office and even surpassing Avengers: Endgame domestically. This may be why National Geographic, along with Rex, are teaming up for the working title of Top Gun: The Next Generation. The documentary will follow students of one of the U.S. Navy's most demanding training and selection programs as they train to join the ranks of the elite fighter pilots.

"With so many millions of fans of the film around the world, I was immediately drawn to this series - these elite jet pilots are not only extremely accomplished and impressive, but all have very different stories to tell," said Tom McDonald, EVP, Global Factual and Unscripted Content, National Geographic. "With Nat Geo's exclusive unprecedented inside access, this series promises to be an exhilarating, visually jaw-dropping and fascinating journey into the intensely competitive world of elite flying."

"The intimate access we have gained to the characters and the emotional character-led story arcs that run through the series will paint a vivid, compelling narrative around the young men and women embarking on this highly stressful process," said Tayna Shaw, managing director, Zinc Television. "That narrative will elevate the series beyond the noise and spectacle of fighter jets to tell the tense, nuanced and poignant human stories behind the public-facing bravado. This is a unique project and we are thrilled to be bringing it to viewers."

What is National Geographic's Top Gun docuseries about?

The series follows a group of officers as they push their limits on the grueling Advanced Flight Training Program. For the first time ever, they will be embarking on some of the most challenging flight tests possible including landing on an aircraft carrier at sea. The elite nature of the course means that only a minority - the very best - will make it to the top to fly the world's most advanced jet - the F-35C Lightning II.

The emotional character-led stories will primarily be told through the perspective of a diverse range of Navy student pilots. This first-time access will allow the series to follow the prospective naval aviators every step of the way - in the air, in the classroom, off-base and at home - as we discover who's got what it takes to make it to the F-35C.

This observational documentary will have epic aerial sequences while intimate moments reveal the emotions of the young candidates and the immense pressure they face.

Will there be a Top Gun 3?

Of course, fans are wondering if there will be a third Top Gun movie in the future. You would think someone like producer Jerry Bruckheimer would have an idea of whether Top Gun 3 is even a possibility. Back at the beginning of the year, Bruckheimer spoke on those Top Gun 3 plans.

"You tell me, I have no idea," Bruckheimer told Variety. "I wish ... We'll see, you never know." When asked if he's spoken to Cruise about ideas for another film, the producer replied, "Not yet. He's in the middle of shooting Mission: Impossible. He's got a lot of difficult, very hard stunts he's doing, so it's not the time to take his attention away from what's important to him right now."

The Black Phone Gets a Call From Funko https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-black-phone-gets-a-call-from-funko/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 16:03:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 2ac46a84-6a51-4bf6-b847-950635ea312b psx-20231016-101624.jpg

Horror fans loved the 2021 film The Black Phone, including ComicBook.com's Charlie Ridgely who gave the movie a 4 out of 5 and called it a "killer thriller" that "grabs your attention and never lets go." In the film, the serial kidnapper/killer known as "The Grabber" is played by Ethan Hawke, and if there's one thing we all know about horror films, it's that combining a good performance with a cool mask equals success. It also means that Funko will come calling, which brings us to today's drop.

Indeed, two Funko Pops of The Grabber from The Black Phone are now available for you to pre-order here at Entertainment Earth. They should also arrive here at Hot Topic and here on Amazon in the very near future. The first figure features The Grabber mask with glasses, but lucky fans will get a rare Chase version without the glasses shipped to them at random. There's also a Funko Pop of The Grabber in an alternate (and bloody) costume.

The Black Phone Funko Pops follow a huge collection of horror-themed Funko Pop exclusives for Halloween that Hot Topic launched last week. You can check those out right here along with the collection of Funko Pop exclusives from NYCC 2023.

Will The Black Phone Get a Sequel?

Speaking with ComicBook.com about a sequel to The Black Phone, director Scott Derrickson confirmed, "It's possible. It's not a definite thing, but if it does become definite, you'll be the first to hear." As far as the importance of Hawke to the experience, Derrickson added, "I can tell you this much, I wouldn't make a Black Phone sequel without Ethan. I don't think there'd be any point in doing that."

Joe Hill similarly pointed out how the mask worn by The Grabber would be a significant fixture of any future films.

"There have been some really, really good conversations about a sequel. And the thing is, as soon as I saw the mask, which was designed by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, as soon as I saw the mask I thought, 'If this film is a hit, there'll be a sequel,' because the mask is so iconic," Hill admitted to ComicBook.com in 2022 about a sequel. "It is like Freddy Krueger's glove, it is like Michael Myers' mask, it is this thing where it's the imagery, iconic imagery, that haunts people's sleep. And, look, in horror, guys like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and Frankenstein, and Dracula, none of these guys stay buried. They all claw their way out of the grave for a sequel and then a threequel."

He continued, "There have been talks about how to do a sequel that wouldn't suck. How to do a sequel that doesn't cheapen the film that came before, that's still scary, that's still intense, that feels organic. And those conversations have been pretty good. But if I were to provide any details, Scott and [writer C. Robert] Cargill would lock me in the basement in the film, and that's it. And the phone doesn't work. As you know, the phone doesn't work. I can't call anyone to get out. So I would decline to offer any real granular details about the possible sequel."

Director Greg Nicotero Gives Promising Update on The Keep Remake (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-keep-movie-reboot-remake-greg-nicotero-status-update/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 15:51:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh fb08c24b-75ea-4d67-b464-97968d173f63

News emerged late last year that The Keep, the novel by F. Paul Wilson, was set to get a reboot from filmmaker Greg Nicotero, though no substantial updates on the project have emerged since. Nicotero recently confirmed that fans haven't heard any updates because the project was delayed due to the writers' strike, though also admitted that, with the strike resolved, he hopes to be moving forward on the project in the near future. Given that the actors' strike is still ongoing, it's unclear when production could begin. In the meantime, fans can see Nicotero's Creepshow Season 4, which premiered on Shudder, AMC+, and AMC on October 13th.

"Unfortunately, we got hit with the writers' strike right around the time we were starting to pitch that. We have a really, really great take with a really great writer. We're ready to go back out with that," Nicotero revealed to ComicBook.com.

Wilson's website describes the story, "'Something is murdering my men.' Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore -- who just happens to be Jewish -- to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way -- a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny."

Nicotero added, "It's interesting, because the few people that I've talked to about the project, a lot of people don't realize that The Keep was one of the first -- the Nazi bad guys get their comeuppance because they come into contact with a force that is greater than them. Raiders of the Lost Ark, of course, did it. It's a great story. A lot of people don't realize that The Keep was really the [one] that did it. F. Paul Wilson was, really, the first guy to do it, to do it right."

The Keep was previously adapted into a film in 1983 by acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann, though a series of behind-the-scenes challenges resulted in him disowning the theatrically released film, which was a disappointment both critically and financially.

"The challenge is making that story feel fresh, because it's been copied, even a lot from The Keep, quite a bit," Nicotero teased. "So I think we have a really great take on it and I'm really excited about it. So, soon, soon, soon."

Based on George A. Romero's iconic 1982 horror-comedy classic, Creepshow is still the most fun you'll ever have being scared. A comic book comes to life in a series of vignettes, exploring terrors ranging from murder, creatures, monsters, and delusions to the supernatural and unexplainable. You never know what will be on the next page...

Check out Creepshow Season 4 on Shudder, AMC+, and AMC now. Stay tuned for details on The Keep.

Disney's Supermassive 100 Movie Legacy Animated Film Blu-ray Box Set Is Back https://comicbook.com/movies/news/disneys-supermassive-100-movie-legacy-animated-film-blu-ray-box-set-disney-birthday/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 15:33:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 49fa58b1-affe-48e5-8456-5b03562396ff

The Walt Disney company officially celebrates its 100th birthday today, October 16th, but the party has raged on since the beginning of 2023 with an endless amount of merch ranging from apparel to Funko Pops to LEGO sets. One of the biggest items released thus far was the ridiculously massive Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection Blu-ray box set. Despite also having a massive price tag, the set was recently out of stock. However, it's back for Disney's birthday, and everything you need to know can be found below.

The set will contain 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Pixar (titles listed below) bundled together in a self-standing, hardbound, three-volume set that "unfolds into your own storybook" with original theatrical poster art. It will also include digital codes for each movie, a collectible lithograph from Disney Animation's new musical comedy Wish, a collectible crystal Mickey ears hat with exclusive Disney 100 engraving, and a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Pre-orders for the set are priced at an eye-watering, bowel-shaking, $1500 here at Walmart as an exclusive. The price is clearly to steep for many, but this is an extremely limited edition release, so expect collectors to resell it for twice as much after they sell out. That said, you can probably buy all of the Blu-rays cheaper individually and Disney is beginning to roll out 4K versions of these films, but if you're looking for a bundle deal then this set isn't for you.

Parents Upset Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey Shown to Fourth Graders https://comicbook.com/movies/news/parents-upset-winnie-the-pooh-blood-and-honey-shown-to-fourth-graders/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 15:31:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame f1a03992-2a09-42bd-9236-0f608e4d2fda

Parents in Florida are upset after a teacher at The Academy for Innovative Education, a charter school in Miami Springs, reportedly showed roughly a third of the horror movie Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey to a group of fourth traders earlier this month. A local CBS affiliate quotes parents as saying their concerns weren't being taken seriously enough, while the school itself declined to make a specific comment about how the situation was addressed with the teacher, saying only that the administration "promptly addressed this issue directly with the teacher." By virtue of being a charter school, the AIE does not answer to the Miami-Dade Public Schools.

According to the CBS story, the students voted to watch the movie, then had second thoughts upon seeing how scary it was. Parents are upset with the teacher, both for allowing the students to choose the movie, and for failing to promptly turn it off after it became clear it was not age-appropriate.

"The Academy for Innovative Education has become aware that a segment of a horror movie was shown to fourth graders, Monday, October 2, 2023, that was not suitable for the age group," Vera Hirsh, head of the school, told CBS Miami in a statement. "Our administration promptly addressed this issue directly with the teacher and has taken appropriate action to ensure the safety and well-being of students. We are actively monitoring the students and our mental health counselor and principal have already met with those students who have expressed concerns."

"I feel completely abandoned by the school," said Michelle Diaz, one of the parents in question, who spoke with CBS after a meeting with the school's principal.

The complaints come amid a torrent of controversy surrounding books and other educational materials being challenged or removed from Florida public schools as part of an organized campaign by right-wing special interest groups. Ironically, those groups largely leave charter and private schools alone. Their focuses also tend to be on sex and cultural issues, rather than violence.

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey was released shortly after Pooh fell into the public domain. Using the iconography of A. A. Milne's original novel, the movie steers clear of either the characters still protected by copyright from later Pooh stories, or elements of the characters still trademarked by Disney, such as Pooh's more modern look or his iconic red t-shirt.

In Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Money, Pooh and Piglet are reimagined axe-wielding maniacs who terrorize a group of college students in the woods. The film is not rated by the Motion Picture Association, but a look at its synopsis or thumbnail would leave little doubt that it is not a movie intended for younger audiences.

Electric Dreams: Reboot of Cult-Classic in Development https://comicbook.com/movies/news/electric-dreams-reboot-of-cult-classic-in-development/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 14:26:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 7ac33194-b65b-4b38-a80f-266bc591970b

Film producer Paul Davidson, who previously oversaw The Orchard and IDW Entertainment, has acquired the rights to remake Electric Dreams. The 1984 original, from writer and producer Rusty Lemorande, centered on a young man who buys an advanced computer, which starts to develop sentience and becomes obsessed with his attractive neighbor, creating a strange -- and unique for its time -- love triangle. Starring Lenny Von Dohlen (Twin Peaks), Virginia Madsen (Candyman), Bud Cort (Dogma), and Maxwell Caulfield (Empire Records), the movie was a critical and box office disappointment, but earned a cult following on home video in the years that followed.

Brian T. Arnold (the upcoming film In the End) will write the movie. Davidson and Arnold are named as producers, and Lemorande will serve as executive producer. Variety, who first reported the deal, did not name a potential director.

"I'm glad this project is getting a new life," said Lemorande in a statement. "With all the recent A.I. developments, it's time it's remade. Hopefully Edgar will soon become as famous as Hal."

"I'm so excited to be a part of bringing Electric Dreams to our modern age," added Arnold. "The recent advances in and proliferation of artificial intelligence have made us all rethink our relationship to technology and what it truly means to be human. This project is such a fun opportunity to explore how technology is rapidly changing the way we live, work, create, and even fall in love - which is actually kind of existentially terrifying if you stop and think about it."

In his own statement, Davidson said Electric Dreams is "an iconic film that left a deep imprint on me from the first time I saw it. Released in what is clearly one of the best decades for film ever, it remains a classic that feels especially prescient today. Joining forces with Brian and Rusty is immensely exciting."

Lemorande had retained the rights to the film after its release, allowing for the deal to be struck basically between a couple of producers with minimal red tape.

There is no word yet on who might appear in the film, or when it might be planned for release.

The Hanging Tree Single From New The Hunger Games Movie Release Announced https://comicbook.com/movies/news/rachel-zegler-the-hanging-tree-hunger-games-ballad-of-songbirds-snakes-single-announcement/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 14:19:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 5ad27482-416f-46ae-9177-1d4010dfed5f

The release date for Rachel Zegler's new single from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes has been revealed. The single, titled "The Hanging Tree," is pretty significant in The Hunger Games franchise. Fans first heard Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) sing it during The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, but it has been passed down through generations in the franchise. Now, audiences will get to experience the origin of "The Hanging Tree" as Zegler's character, Lucy Gray Baird, brings it to life. The song will release on Friday, October 20th at 12:00 a.m. ET on Geffen Records.

As for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, it has a release date of less than a month later on November 17th. The prequel takes place 64 years before the events in the original Hunger Games trilogy, which is based on Susanne Collins' novel series, and features Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow before he became the tyrannical President of Panem. The latest trailer for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes debuted in September, giving an extended look at the drama that will unfold.

What is The Hunger Games prequel about?

Experience the story of THE HUNGER GAMES -- 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became the tyrannical President of Panem.

THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray's charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favor. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.

Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film stars Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andr?s Rivera, Jason Schwartzman, and Viola Davis. Lawrence directed 2013's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, and had this to say about returning to direct the prequel: "This is the kind of playground that doesn't come along very often," Lawrence said during an appearance at CineEurope earlier this year, "so when you have a chance to return, it's enormously gratifying."

Once Upon a Studio Filmmakers Reveal How They Brought Back Robin Williams's Genie https://comicbook.com/anime/news/once-upon-a-studio-brought-back-robin-williams-genie/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 14:18:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame ef112136-fd71-4391-b046-b328b43d1a9f

The filmmakers behind the just-released Disney short Once Upon a Studio knew that any "family photo" that brought together dozens of characters from throughout the studio's history would be incomplete without an appearance by Robin Williams's beloved Genie from Aladdin. They did not want to recast the character for the short, though, which means a lot of digging around for unused lines that could be assembled into something viable. In the short, Genie pops out of a page of drawings, knocking over Olaf from Frozen, who falls apart.

"I haven't seen a fall like that since Rome," Genie quips, then uses his magic to put Olaf back together, saying, "That's better." And, yes, those are lines from Williams -- and his involvement was approved by his family and estate.

According to Variety, directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy were aware from the start that they needed Genie. After digging throught he archives to find some lines that they could use, Producers Bradford Simonsen and Yvett Merino reached out to the Williams Estate.

"We tried to take them on the journey with us to say, 'We've got this very special short that we're doing. Robin as the genie means so much to so many people and we would really love to involve him,'" Simonsen explained. "So Dan listened to the outtakes from the original recording and he found those little bites that we could use. We went back to the estate and said, 'This is what we hope to do.' Eric [Goldberg], who originally animated the genie is on the show, and he's going to be part of it.' And it was wonderful to see that happen."

Williams had a famous conflict with Disney following the release of Aladdin. While he was excited to be a part of the project, he took a significant pay cut in order to get a deal where his voice would not be used to promote products. The cut was so enormous -- he got $75,000, rather than the $8 million that was his asking price at the time for live-action parts -- that it certainly seemed like Disney would be motivated to take the deal.

"Then all of a sudden, they release an advertisement--one part was the movie, the second part was where they used the movie to sell stuff," Williams told Today in 1993. "Not only did they use my voice, they took a character I did and overdubbed it to sell stuff. That was the one thing I said: 'I don't do that.' That was the one thing where they crossed the line."

As a result, Williams didn't return for the direct-to-video sequel Aladdin: The Return of Jafar, with the part of the Genie being played by The Simpsons star Dan Castellaneta, who also appeared in the Aladdin TV series.

It wasn't until Jeffrey Katzenberg left Disney, replaced by a new chief executive who was willing to apologize to Williams for the way Disney mishandled the situation, that the actor mended fences with the studio, appearing in the series' third and final animated movie, Aladdin and the King of Thieves. In 2009, Williams was awarded the title of Disney Legend at the D23 Expo.

Alien Director Fede Alvarez Reveals Major Influences on New Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/alien-director-fede-alvarez-reveals-major-influences-on-new-sequel/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 10:53:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 962ac79f-57be-4285-8743-5d583ddac578

Filmmaker Fede Alvarez is developing a new installment in the Alien franchise, and with the WGA strike now concluded, he has taken to social media to tease it a little. Sharing a photo of his bookshelf, Alvarez showed fans a glimpse at the Alien "bibliography" he's working with, which includes reference books and companions to existing movies, as well as an omnibus of old Alien comics stories. Alvarez's Alien film, planned for release in 2024, reportedly filmed between March and July (they wrapped production before the SAG-AFTRA strike began), and stars Isabela Merced, Aileen Wu, Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Reneaux, and Spike Fearn. Produced by Ridley Scott and Michael Pruss, Alvarez's Alien is reportedly a stand-alone installment with no story ties to the existing films.

The books shared include: The Art of Alien: Isolation; Aliens: The Set Photography; Giger's Alien, The Art of Ron Cobb; The Making of Alien; Alien Vault; Alien: The Blueprints; Aliens: The Original Years vol. 1 (a comics anthology from Marvel); Alien Covenant: David's Drawings; and Aliens: Colonial Marines Technical Manual.

In the caption, the filmmaker quipped, "Some of my bibliography when developing my Alien film. Did I missed anything?"

You can see the makeshift library here:

fede-alvarez-alien-books.jpg

The Alien movies are interesting because they represent not just a beloved horror and science fiction franchise, but one that has frequently struggled to nail its tone and identity, leading to numerous aborted projects over the years.

Alvarez's Alien movie is set for a theatrical release next August. The road to that release date also took a surprising path, as the movie was originally being developed as a Hulu-exclusive. It's likely that the success of Prey (and the perception that Disney had left money on the table by relegating it to streaming-only) influenced that decision. Prey actually took the stop spot on the US home entertaniment disc sales chart last week, with its Blu-ray release managing to edge out bigger, more expensive movies do to the film's strong word of mouth.

No specific details about the film's plot have been revealed, yet it was previously teased as following "a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

The new Alien currently has a release date of August 16, 2024.

Hell House LLC Helmer Teases Future of Franchise https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hell-house-llc-more-sequels-on-way-tease/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 04:56:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt ac19565e-be03-4c15-8ff2-913f35048de2

The development of Shudder's Hell House franchise has largely been one film at a time, with no bible or overarching, MCU-like plan established for the series at its onset. Though the property is now about to release its fourth film, series helmer Stephen Cognetti tells us he tackles one film in its entirety before deciding where to go next.

"No, I don't think that far ahead. I write movie-to-movie," Cognetti tells ComicBook.com "I shot a film in 2021 that has not come out yet, which is just a good old fashioned haunted house story. That has been in post-production for two years, and in that time waiting for that film to get completed, I brought back the Hell House idea and wrote Hell House LLC: The Carmichael Manor."

The Carmichael Manor serves as complementary story to the main trilogy, helping expand the lore of the Abaddon Hotel and the wider Hell House Universe.

"I wrote this story based on just wanting to explore a little bit what might've happened in the hotel back in the eighties, but only introducing those ideas a little bit," the filmmaker adds. That said, there are already ideas brewing for a fifth film in the series, which will be teased in a now-confirmed post-credits scene at the end of Hell House LLC: The Carmichael Manor.

"If I do another Hell House film, I know where I want to go and I kind of tease that at the end of the credits," Cognetti concludes. "I just don't know if that's what's going to be next. It could be something Hell House, or it could be something completely separate. I don't know yet."

The original Hell House LLC trilogy is now streaming on Shudder. Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor hits the service on October 30th.

Knives Out 3 Gets Major Update From Rian Johnson After Success of Glass Onion https://comicbook.com/movies/news/knives-out-3-update-coming-soon-glass-onion-reviews/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 03:52:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt de5b5c15-a5cd-45f7-9c2f-295152c6b683

It may be a bit later than anticipated, but Knives Out 3 is most certainly on its way. In a new wide-ranging profile about his new filmmaking incubator, Knives Out helmer Rian Johnson has confirmed he's actively developing the threequel now that the writers' strike is over.

"It's coming along. I obviously couldn't work during the strike, and now that it's over, I'm diving in full force, and so it's coming along," Johnson said in the piece with TheWrap. "I've got the premise, I've got the setting, I've got what the movie is in my head. It's just a matter of writing the damn thing."

Little has been revealed about the movie, other than Johnson's previous desires to set the film somewhere in America after Glass Onion took Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to Greece.

"I want it to be in America," Johnson shared with Insider last December. "There's a lot of tempting things of going to - Paris or the Alps - but I feel it's really important that these are American movies. Even with Glass Onion, it's set overseas but it's a group of Americans who are trapped on an island together, so bringing it back to somewhere a little closer to home I think could be a good thing for the next one."

Knives Out 3 is Johnson's second of two movies under his lucrative deal with Netflix, which swooped in at the height of the pandemic to purchase the rights to the franchise.

"It's interesting. We structured the [Netflix deal] so that if I wanted to do something else next, I could," the filmmaker explained to Deadline last year. "And I think everybody assumed I'd have a couple other random ideas -- unrelated projects -- that I've been kicking around. But, honestly, over the past couple of months, the most exciting creative thing to me right now is that third movie. And so, I think I'm going to hop right into it. Not because of a contractual obligation, but, genuinely, that's the shiny object I find my nose pointed toward right now. [It's] the idea of figuring out how it can be completely different from this one as well as the first one."

Knives Out is available wherever movies are sold while Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery can be streamed on Netflix.

Hell House LLC Director Reveals Real-Life Inspiration for Viral Film https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hell-house-llc-based-on-true-story-real-life-inspiration-revealed/ Mon, 16 Oct 2023 02:30:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt b772e5cc-7787-4f2b-99cd-42cfa1ef3c28

The idea of demonic possessions and ghosts are already plenty scary for most, but when a horror property is rooted in real-life events, that terror is often taken to another level. While the Hell House LLC franchise isn't based on real-life events, there's one particular house that inspired the events of the first film and, in turn, the rest of the property. Hell House helmer Stephen Cognetti tells us his inspiration for the film mirrors the journey Alex (Danny Bellini) takes in the film itself.

"I lived in Manhattan for a long time and I lived up in Washington Heights, which is the northern part of Manhattan. And right across the GW Bridge is Rockland County," Cognetti recalls. "And I drove out there, found his abandoned house and the story clicked a little bit more about Alex and how he left the city and went out to Rockland County to start Hell House."

As for why the idea of an abandoned building brought back to life clicked, Cognetti says it'd be the perfect place for something to go so terribly wrong and nobody would be any the wiser.

"A haunted house gone wrong is just a concept I thought was so fun because who would ever know if something was wrong? I've already been to two haunts this season and the actors were all amazing," he adds. "And I always think about how that concept still lives. It's like anything could go wrong and you would've no idea. You would just think it's all part of the show no matter how real someone's wound looks, or whatever. How many people screaming bloody murder and you think, 'Ah, that's just an actor,' but something could possibly go wrong there. I thought it was a fun concept."

The original Hell House LLC trilogy is now streaming on Shudder. Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor hits the service on October 30th.

Hell House LLC Director Reveals the Key to the Perfect Found Footage Movie https://comicbook.com/horror/news/hell-house-llc-director-stephen-cognetti-key-perfect-found-footage-movie/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 23:18:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 2d4c0713-c251-471c-9b00-5ca853d1364f

Found footage is a technique that's both horror's most rewarding and most challenging. You have the mainstays of the format like The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield going up against countless others. Then there are entries like the Hell House LLC franchise, popularizing the genre once again after a decades-long period of mediocrity. As Hell House LLC helmer Stephen Cognetti tells us, there's one key to making a successful found footage picture: you've got to make it scary.

"I think you can get a little leeway in found footage about not having the certain types of depth that you learn in writing school and regular features have because you can't do that with found footage because you have to justify the camera, and you're not going to be able to have the third person perspective in a lot of different ways," Cognetti tells ComicBook.com.

That said, Cognetti adds that he still tries to add the depth to the films but doesn't go overboard; he'd much rather have the films be as scary as possible.

"I try to put depth into these stories as much as I can, but it is really hard to do, so really what I think any good found footage just really has to scare people. And I think that's really what people watch these movies for," the filmmaker adds. "I think found footage in general is to be have people scared enough to just to get that rush of adrenaline and being scared because it feels so real."

He concludes, "I think that's why people really want to go to found footage, just to get that sense that, 'I know it's not real, but it felt so real and it's different from a bigger budget narrative feature,' so I think the key is it is just being very scary and I think there's so many good found footage films out there that really achieve that. I don't mean in a shock kind of scare, I mean this this sense of sending-chills-up-your-spine kind of scare."

The original Hell House LLC trilogy is now streaming on Shudder. Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael House hits the service on October 30th.

Once Upon a Studio Directors and Producers Reveal What They Want To See Disney Tackle Next https://comicbook.com/movies/news/once-upon-a-studio-directors-and-producers-reveal-what-they-want-to-see-disney-tackle-next/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 23:06:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 7ca5a794-10ca-4933-a25b-20b06c3a6ad3

Walt Disney Animation Studios is celebrating its 100th anniversary today. Over the last century, the studio has released over 60 films starting with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937. Recently, ComicBook.com had the chance to ask the creatives behind Wish, Disney's next animated feature, and we asked what they want to see from the company in the next 100 years. In another recent interview with the directors and producers of the new short film, Once Upon a Studio, we asked the same question.

"You know, it's interesting because, with stories and technology changing and all that stuff, I just hope Disney keeps doing what they've been doing, which is just finding characters that connect universally, have humanity, have charm, and bring joy," Once Upon a Studio co-director Trent Correy explained. "I mean, the sincerity we always talk about with our characters, it's like no matter the medium or the types of stories they tell, whether they're book adaptions or original or sequels, I think as long as that's at the core of it, that's what's important."

"And I got to say, too, Trent and I have some stories we want to tell and we hope to tell them together," co-director Dan Abraham added.

"Working on this project in particular, obviously, you reflect a lot on the history of the studio and the stories we've told and the ones that we've been lucky enough to be a part of, but the ones that came before and the impact that they had," producer Yvett Merino shared. "But it got me really excited for the next hundred years, and imagine it all started with two brothers who said, 'What if we do this?' That's literally how it started. And all of this came from that. I have a career because of that. And so I'm excited, and knowing what we have going on here in the studio and just to be a part of that, and to be a part of that history is super exciting."

"I think when you come in daily like we do to work in the studio, you have moments, at least I have moments where I do think about the legacy, what we are creating and the future and being part of that," producer Brad Simonsen added. "I think when you do think deeply about that, and you see what we've done with this short, and you see how audiences, everyone reacts to it and then has their character, it makes me incredibly conscious of inclusion and making people feel seen and making sure that the movies we make allow everyone to feel part of our world, and to be part of this journey, and to engage with those characters in a universal way. I think that that's what inspires me now for the future, is really telling stories for the broadest audiences that are core to our being and make the world a better place."

When we asked if there are any existing Disney characters they'd like to expand on, Abraham shared, "I always liked Scamp from Lady in the Tramp, and I know they did a Scamp movie at one point, but I could do a Scamp movie." Correy added, "I'll go with Madam Mim from The Sword in the Stone. I think she could have a cool story. And I love the wizarding duel, I think it's one of the greatest, most charming, magical sequences in animation."

Stay tuned for more from our interviews with the producers and directors of Once Upon a Studio, which will make its broadcast premiere during The Wonderful World of Disney: Disney's 100th Anniversary Celebration! Sunday, October 15th on ABC.

Today, all three heroes got new character posters in addition to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Prince Yan (Park Seo-Joon), and Goose.

"It's amazing. I'm so excited that it's announced and I can talk about," Larson previously said of The Marvels. "Nia's amazing and she got the job because she was the best person for the job. That's one of my favorite parts about this. She just gave an incredible presentation and I'm inspired by her! She has confidence, it's a big deal to step into this thing we know as the Marvel Universe. It's this huge thing and to have a leader who's just like, 'Yeah, I'm meant to be here.'"

What Is The Marvels About?

In The Marvels, which arrives in theaters on November 10th, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels." The Marvels will also see the franchise returns of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Saagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan, Zenobia Shroff as Muneeba Khan, and Mohan Kapur as Yusuf Khan. New cast members include Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Shamier Anderson. Produced by Marvel Studios, The Marvels is directed by Nia DaCosta with a script from DaCosta, Megan McDonnell, and Elissa Karasik.

Kingsman: Matthew Vaughn Says Movie Got Made Because "Bond Got Too Serious" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/kingsman-matthew-vaughn-says-movie-got-made-because-bond-got-too-serious/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 20:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 62b57306-cea2-49b6-9279-b1abc8357468

Matthew Vaughn made his directorial debut in 2004 with Layer Cake, which starred future James Bond actor, Daniel Craig. Vaughn went on to make many popular films, including Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and The King's Man. The action franchise is clearly influenced by Bond but has a sillier edge than the more recent 007 outings. In fact, Vaughn recently spoke at New York Comic Con, and revealed the first Kingsman was made because he felt "Bond got too serious."

"[The idea for Kingsman] literally came with Mark Miller and I in a pub, and, I love you Daniel Craig, but we were just thinking 'Bond's got a bit too serious.' We just came up with it literally over a few pints of Guinness at a pub called The Windsor Castle ... We were talking about how Ian Fleming didn't want to cast Sean Connery. And the director of Dr. No was like to Fleming, 'Give me two weeks and I will transform the Scottish big bloke into an English gentleman.' So he took him to Savile Row. He converted Connery into Bond and we thought, 'Well, let's take that idea and do our version because Connery had his rough edges.' So that was the kernel of the idea."

Will There Be a Kingsman 3?

Kingsman 3 was previously announced, and franchise star Taron Egerton thought the movie would go into production this year. Due to the ongoing SAG strike, it's unlikely the movie will begin filming in 2023, but Vaughn confirmed at NYCC that he will be making the threequel next year in addition to another Kick-Ass film.

"We will be doing a reboot of Kick-Ass next year, but it's a total... it's like... it's as brave as the first one but totally different and more reflective of the times we're in," Vaughn told ComicBook.com. "We are working on that at the moment," Vaughn said of Kingsman 3 during his NYCC panel. "It's a weird time to be in the movie business. We're not making movies, but that's another story. But it's a tough time and ... next year we're rebooting Kick-Ass and we will be making Kingsman 3."

Who Will Be the Next Bond?

Currently, it is unknown who will be playing the next Bond after Daniel Craig's 15-year stint as the spy. However, producer Barbara Broccoli has already stated the character will not be played by a woman.

"He can be of any color, but he is male," Broccoli previously shared. "I believe we should be creating new characters for women -- strong female characters. I'm not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that."

There are many names being tossed around as the next 007, including Marvel star Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Some actors have explained why they aren't right for the role while others have detailed some bad auditions, and some are even throwing their hats in the ring.

"Nobody's in the running," producer Barbara Broccoli told Deadline last year. "We're working out where to go with him, we're talking that through. There isn't a script and we can't come up with one until we decide how we're going to approach the next film because, really, it's a reinvention of Bond. We're reinventing who he is and that takes time. I'd say that filming is at least two years away."

Stay tuned for more updates from NYCC.

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour Movie is Officially the Highest Grossing Concert Film Ever https://comicbook.com/movies/news/taylor-swift-the-eras-tour-movie-officially-highest-grossing-concert-film-justin-bieber/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 19:50:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 816ee58c-d79b-46ed-9c6c-c8ed61d050af

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour movie is finally in theaters and the box office numbers are leaving no doubt that the concert film is the best thing at the party. Not only is the film at the top of the box office and is closing in on the record for best October weekend of all time -- a record currently held by the Joker -- but the movie is officially the highest grossing concert film of all time, with its opening weekend take of almost $97 million eclipsing 2011's Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which brought in just $73 million over the course of its entire theatrical run.

The Eras Tour movie smashing that record isn't exactly a surprise, however. The film had already crossed the $100 million mark in ticket presales well ahead of its release so it was pretty evident that the film would beat out Bieber. It just happened to do so during opening weekend, which means that the overall box office haul can only go up from here. While prior to the movie's release there had been some speculation that The Eras Tour movie might be front-loaded -- meaning that the bulk of viewers seeing the film had already bought tickets and, thus, real-time walk-up sales might be lower given that concert films tend to appeal to fans of the artists making it a niche audience -- The Eras Tour is somewhat unique. On social media, fans have been talking about going to repeat viewings just as many did with the actual concert itself and, schedule-wise, the film will still be in theaters on October 27th -- the date Swift's re-recording of her fifth album, 1989, debuts. For some fans, attending the movie is how they plan to celebrate the album's release.

Taylor Swift Made a Surprise Appearance on SNL

On Saturday night, fans were treated to a surprise by Swift when the performer made a surprise appearance on the Season 49 premiere of Saturday Night Live. Swift appeared briefly to introduce musical guest Ice Spice's second performance of the evening. Swift showing up to support Ice Spice is just the latest "team up" of sorts for the artists as Ice Spice appears on a version of Swift's song, "Karma", and appears in the song's official music video as well.

Of course, Swift's appearance on SNL wasn't the only Taylor Swift-related moment in the episode. The evening also featured a skit offering a humorous take on the NFL's coverage of Swift attending Travis Kelce's football games -- with that skit featuring a surprise cameo by the Kansas City Chiefs tight end himself.

What Is Taylor Swift's Movie About?

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour will be a filmed version of Swift's landmark Eras Tour, which completed its first U.S. leg in August. Filmed across three nights of shows in Los Angeles' Sofi Stadium, the film will showcase Swift's performance of songs from all ten of her albums -- Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, reputation, Lover, folklore, evermore, and Midnights. In celebration of the movie's release, AMC upgraded its ticket-booking capacity by five times to account for fan demand. It also priced standard adult tickets at $19.89 -- a reference to the year Swift was born, as well as her fifth album 1989 -- with children's and senior tickets at $13.13, which is a reference to Swift's lucky number.

"The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I'm overjoyed to tell you that it'll be coming to the big screen soon," Swift wrote when announcing the film on social media. "Starting Oct 13th you'll be able to experience the concert film in theaters in North America! ...Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged 1, 2, 3 LGB!!!! (iykyk)"

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour is in theaters now.

Once Upon a Studio Directors Remember Disney Legend Burny Mattinson https://comicbook.com/movies/news/once-upon-a-studio-directors-remember-disney-legend-burny-mattinson/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 18:54:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak c96921ed-2ec9-4f99-8887-948ebba4bdcb

Walt Disney Animation Studios is turning 100, and they're celebrating with Once Upon s Studio, a new short film that is debuting tonight on ABC during a special celebration. The film sees the return of 543 characters from more than 85 Disney feature-length and short films, but animated favorites aren't the only ones you can spot onscreen. Once Upon a Studio also features a cameo from Disney Legend, Burnett "Burny" Mattinson, an animator, director, producer, and story artist who worked for the company from 1953 until he passed away in 2023. Mattinson's 70 years at Disney made him the longest-serving employee in the company's history. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with the short film's directors, Dan Abraham and Trent Correy, and they spoke about Mattinson's cameo.

"Right from the get-go, when we started storyboarding this and when we were working on this, and nobody knew it and nobody was asking us to do this, and we thought this might be a colossal waste of time, we drew Burny in the storyboards because he had been at the studio for almost 70 years at that point, the longest Disney employee of all time in the history of Disney," Abraham explained. "And he's just a fantastic guy. His first movie was Lady in the Tramp, and his last movie was Strange World from last year. So he is an icon a legend and a sweetheart of a man."

"And he is got a presence around the studio," Correy added. "When you see him walking down the halls, you're like, 'That guy directed Mickey's Christmas Carol and worked on Sleeping Beauty.' It kind of blows your mind a little bit. And then when you meet him, he lived up to every hype. He's just sweet and nice and generous and a mentor in the studio. He worked right until the very end there."

Richard Sherman Returns To Disney For Once Upon a Studio:

Burny Mattinson wasn't the only Disney Legend involved with the creation of Once Upon a Studio. The short features a new version of "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins, which was originally written by songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman. While Robert passed away in 2012, Richard recently celebrated his 95th birthday and recorded a new version of the song for the short. During ComicBook.com's interview with Abraham and Correy, they talked about what it was like working with the iconic songwriter.

"That was an amazing day," Correy shared. "Dan texted me the night before and said, 'Tuck your shirt in, buddy, wear something nice.' Because meeting Richard Sherman, he's a legend. And at 94 years young, he played 'Feed the Birds' for us. And it was a magical day."

"He and his brother Bob were like, they're a soundtrack to my youth," Abraham added. "And I did bring my Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too record for him to sign. I had to play it cool and be like, 'This is awesome and stuff.' But like, oh my gosh, those guys are so talented. And to get to record him at 94 years old in Walt Disney's office on a Friday afternoon on the same piano that he played for Walt, it was just like a constant, 'Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry.' I'll never forget that day."

Stay tuned for more from our interviews with the producers and directors of Once Upon a Studio, which will make its broadcast premiere during The Wonderful World of Disney: Disney's 100th Anniversary Celebration! Sunday, October 15th on ABC.

Argylle: Matthew Vaughn Fired the Movie's Cat on the First Day of Filming https://comicbook.com/movies/news/argylle-matthew-vaughn-fired-cat-on-the-first-day-of-filming-henry-cavill-nycc/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 17:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 11c91365-ce65-4781-a26a-8975dcae8679

Matthew Vaughn appeared at New York Comic Con this weekend, and the director opened up about his past and future projects. Vaughn has helmed many beloved films, including X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman: Secret Service. During his NYCC panel, Vaughn confirmed a Kick-Ass reboot and Kingsman 3 are both in the works in addition to an upcoming musical. The director also talked about his new Apple film, Argylle, which is about "the globe-trotting adventures of super-spy Argylle (former Superman Henry Cavill) across the U.S., London, and other exotic locations." During his panel, Vaughn revealed he had to fire a cat on the first day of filming.

"We had a cat on the first day of filming and I fired the cat because he was very expensive and a pain in the ass," Vaughn revealed. "Then I went home and went into my daughter's bedroom and said, 'I'm gonna borrow your cat.' I didn't quite think it through that I'd have to drive to work with the cat, every day. And on this film, I'm now a director and a cat handler, and I don't like cats to be very clear, I'm a dog person, but I'm now a cat person as well, so. They say don't work with kids, don't work with animals, if they're your own kid or animal, might be the way to do it."

What Stars In Argylle?

In addition to Cavill, Argylle stars Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World Dominion), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2), Sofia Boutella (Rebel Moon), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Catherine O'Hara (Elemental), John Cena (Fast X), Dua Lipa (Barbie), Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2), Jing Lusi (Crazy Rich Asians), Ariana DeBose (Kraven the Hunter), and Samuel L. Jackson (The Marvels). Matthew Vaughn, Adam Bohling, Jason Fuchs, and David Reid serve as producers, with Adam Fishbach, Zygi Kamasa, Carols Peres, and Claudia Vaughn executive producing. Fuchs also wrote the script for the film with Elly Conway.

"Apple believes in cinema and I believe in cinema," Matthew Vaughn told THR in 2021, when the deal was struck. "So we're discussing how to give it the right cinematic release -- not necessarily the normal cinematic release. It'd be a cinematic release that is right for Argylle, and Argylle is quite specific and different. So weirdly, it lends itself to a whole new way of being released."

Apple Original Films has announced that Argylle will be released exclusively in theaters on February 2nd, 2024, before becoming available to stream worldwide. Apple will partner with Universal Pictures for the exclusive theatrical release.

Once Upon a Studio Directors and Producers Reflect on Working With Songwriter Richard Sherman https://comicbook.com/movies/news/once-upon-a-studio-directors-producers-reflect-on-working-with-songwriter-richard-sherman-disney-100/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 16:54:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 52700e3e-ee0c-4624-afde-5a65bc605aff

Once Upon s Studio, a new short film celebrating Walt Disney Animation Studios' 100th anniversary, is debuting tonight on ABC during a special celebration. The short features 543 characters from more than 85 Disney feature-length and short films, and a very special Disney legend returned for the project. Once Upon a Studio features a new version of "Feed the Birds" from Mary Poppins, which was originally written by songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman. While Robert passed away in 2012, Richard recently celebrated his 95th birthday and recorded a new version of "Feed the Birds" for the short film. ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with the film's directors, Dan Abraham and Trent Correy, in addition to producers Yvett Merino and Brad Simonsen. During the interview, the creatives talked about what it was like working with the iconic songwriter.

And to get to record him at 94 years old in Walt Disney's office on a Friday afternoon on the same piano that he played for Walt, it was just like a constant, 'Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry.' I'll never forget that day."

"I think just being in the same room with him, to be honest, was geeky enough for me," Merino explained. "We had met him a year prior. Howard Green was gracious enough to introduce us, he was coming in to celebrate his birthday, and we showed him the work-in-progress short, and one thing led to another ... The recording in Walt's office on that Friday afternoon, I was in tears just standing there and just being there. And it's one of those things of, 'This is really happening. Okay.' So yeah, it was such a special, even today, I was like, 'Wow, that really happened.'"

"Every once in a while at our studio, they send out an email saying they're opening up tours of Walt's office, and then you have to be really fast," Simonsen explained. "They go super fast. And this was, I can't remember, it was like three or four years ago that I signed up for one of those tours just on my own randomly. And I went and did the actual tour where they tell you all about everything. And I was so incredibly inspired at that moment in time in Walt's office, and they tell you everything, and there's still scripts. Everything's set up exactly how it was. So when this came up, when this opportunity came up and they said, 'Well, yeah, why don't we do it in Walt's office?' My head almost exploded."

Walt Disney Animation Studios is officially 100 years old, and the company is celebrating this milestone in various ways. Tonight, October 15th, ABC is airing a new short film, Once Upon a Studio, which features 543 characters from more than 85 Disney feature-length and short films. In honor of the project's release, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with the film's directors, Dan Abraham and Trent Correy, in addition to producers Yvett Merino and Brad Simonsen. We asked each creative what was most important to them when it came to honoring 100 years of Disney.

"You know what we kind of said early on that we wanted it to be like a family reunion that you would actually want to go to," Abraham explained. "It was very, very important to us that the characters look and sound exactly like they did in their films. You get such a short amount of time with each one of them that we wanted people to be reunited with their friends. These characters mean a lot to people, and they have their favorites, and they kind of have ownership of who they relate to and why, and a core memory from their childhood and all that. So we just really wanted to do service to all the fans out there that we wanted to reunite with their friends."

"And I would just add that we worked extremely hard to try to represent everything from Snow White to our upcoming Wish, coming up this year," Correy added. "And I think the goal of the short was always, we just want to bring eight and a half minutes of joy to the audiences. We just want to help remind them why they love Disney, why they love these characters, and kind of bring back that nostalgia."

"I think it's honoring the legacy, and there's so much that kind of goes into making any film, an animated film, and so knowing how much work has gone into everything over the years is really a moment to honor our characters. And then the voices behind them, our artists who created it, and really everyone who has worked in the studio over the past hundred years. I mean, there was a moment where the question was asked,'Can we credit everyone who's ever worked at the studio?'" Merino shared. "'Like, we'd love to, but that would be a 10-minute credit roll. So I don't think so.'"

"There's a privilege and a responsibility, I think, that comes with making a movie like this, and every day is a pinch-me moment, and you're excited and giddy and you feel like a little kid on Christmas morning," Simonsen added. "And at the same time, as producers, you're working for rights clearances and to make sure that everybody has what they need to be successful and to maintain that positive energy and magic on the show so that we all collectively produce the best we can to live up to the legacy. So yeah, it's a great question, and you do have it in the back of your mind the whole time that you are privileged in a good way to be part of this journey, and you are responsible for creating something that lives up to the legacy."

Stay tuned for more from our interviews with the producers and directors of Once Upon a Studio, which will make its broadcast premiere during The Wonderful World of Disney: Disney's 100th Anniversary Celebration! Sunday, October 15th on ABC.

Saturday Night Live Roasts Barbie Movie With Pete Davidson as Ken https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/saturday-night-live-barbie-sketch-pete-davidson-ken/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 04:20:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 3f09038f-45a5-4138-b0bc-520f4f888775

Barbie has been out for three full months already and it's still getting lampooned. During the Season 49 premiere of Saturday Night Live, the first pre-recorded sketch of the night saw first-time host Pete Davidson playing the role of his own "Ken" doll. Featuring elaborate pink-drenched set pieces, Davidson and other members of the SNL cast played different versions of "Pete" as they recalled the tabloid-worthy events of Davidson's life in a musical number.

The song itself touched on anything from Davidson's public battle with mental illness, to his various relationships and even his recent legal troubles. An SNL sketch months after release proves the legs the Warners Bros. flick has, which has made Barbie one of the studio's highest-grossing films of the past few years.

"One of the reasons the film has done so well is because it's original," Barbie producer David Heyman explained. "There's a real hunger for originality. Greta Gerwig is a singular artist, she pushes the boundaries of what's possible in the most collaborative way. The film is fun, thematically rich, and very moving. It was challenging, of course, but when we made it, there was a spirit of fun that permeated the production."

What Is Barbie About?

In Barbie, to live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you're a Ken. From Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig comes Barbie, which hit theaters on July 21st. Barbie stars Oscar-nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, alongside America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. The film also stars Ana Cruz Kayne, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, Sharon Rooney, Nicola Coughlan, Ritu Arya, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Dua Lipa and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren. Gerwig directed Barbie from a screenplay by Gerwig & Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach, based on Barbie by Mattel.

Iron Lung Movie Gets First Teaser From Markiplier https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/iron-lung-movie-teaser-trailer-markiplier/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 03:54:00 +0000 Cade Onder 9b6f616a-0bd8-4d76-a942-bfce1c45bd81

The Iron Lung movie has gotten its first teaser trailer. Video game adaptations are the hot new trend in Hollywood which is pretty shocking given the history of the genre. For years, video game movies were considered a death mark as they were almost always catastrophic disasters critically and commercially. However, the trend has changed in recent years as more and more creatives and studio executives have figured out how to crack the code. Some have opted to turn these adaptations into shows that can provide the time needed to bring lengthier stories to life. Others have decided to tell new stories in existing worlds.

One of the next video game adaptations is coming later this year and it's based on the popular horror game Iron Lung. The movie is being directed, written, and produced by YouTuber Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach. He will also star in the film alongside Jacksepticeye. Iron Lung is all about a person being stuck in a submarine in an ocean of blood, so naturally, you can imagine how spooky that may be. The film was shot earlier this year and is slated to release sometime in 2023. While we don't have a firm date, Markiplier did release the first look at the film on Twitter and it looks like it will have a pretty sinister tone. You can check out the first look at the film below.

The Iron Lung is expected to hit theaters later this year. It's unclear if it will have a wide release or if it will be a limited release with showings in key cities for a short run. Given the project seems to be fairly low budget and doesn't have any known studios/distributors attached to it, it's unclear how the movie will be released and what the scale of it will be. Another horror video game, Five Nights at Freddy's, has a movie being released later this month. It will be released both in theaters and on Peacock on the same day. It's expected to be a big commercial success due to the popularity of the franchise.

The Strangers Series Could Continue After Reboot Trilogy https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-strangers-series-could-continue-after-reboot-trilogy/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 01:56:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4e987536-32f2-451f-a2fc-7019e341afb0

The Strangers was released back in 2008 and was followed by The Strangers: Prey at Night in 2018, and now the horror franchise is back with an all-new trilogy directed by Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, The Exorcist: The Beginning). The trilogy stars Riverdale alum Madelaine Petsch, and all three installments are expected to be released in 2024. In Chapter 1, Petsch plays a woman who stops at a remote vacation rental in the woods with her fianc?, but things turn deadly when a gang of masked strangers attack them. ComicBook.com recently had the chance to chat with Harlin, and the director teased there are more stories to tell after the trilogy.

"Thanks for asking that question because I definitely see more movies and it's almost like - that's why I don't even call it a trilogy - I call it the first three movies of the Strangers Universe," Harlin explained. "And the way the third movie ends, if people thought that the original movie ended in a titillating way because Liv Tyler sort of gasps in the end of that. And you question, like, 'Did she live, what happened?' If you thought that was thought-provoking, I think that when the third movie ends, you are like, 'Oh my God, what's, what's gonna happen now?'"

Harlin continued, "Because this is really an exploration of a young woman who's been the victim of incredible violence and an exploration of what happens to a person mentally and physically. How do you survive it? Where do you go? And in the end of the third movie, you have more questions than answers and I definitely see a bunch of new movies coming after that, and just continuing her story. So instead of going the route of the original film and the sequel of it, the sequel was about the strangers attacking some other random people. Our focus is our central character and her journey and where she's gonna go."

No official release date for The Strangers: Chapter 1 has been confirmed, but the movie and its two sequels will be released in 2024. Stay tuned fore more updates about The Strangers trilogy.

Matthew Vaughn Confirms He's Making a Musical Movie Next Year https://comicbook.com/movies/news/matthew-vaughn-confirms-hes-making-a-musical-movie-next-year-2024-nucc/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 01:25:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 5fc611c5-c8b2-4ac0-a1a8-b64a715cbb48

New York Comic Con kicked off on Thursday, and a lot of big names have been in attendance. Matthew Vaughn, the director best known for helming X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman: Secret Service, had his own spotlight panel and talked about his upcoming projects and shared stories from his time working in Hollywood. In addition to confirming a Kick-Ass reboot and Kingsman 3, the director also revealed he will be making a musical next year. In 2019, Vaughn produced the Elton John biopic Rocketman, so he's no stranger to the genre.

"I'm actually going to be doing a musical next year, can't talk about it," Vaughn teased. "And it's taking me so long to find a musical to do because the musical -like an action movie is only as good as the action or a comedy is only as good as the humor - a musical is only as good as the music, and Elton John's catalog is pretty hard to beat, so I'm trying to match it, at least, and I think we've nearly got there... it's batsh*t crazy but it's fun."

What Movie Musicals Are Coming Soon?

While fans wait to learn more about Vaughn's musical, there are a lot of exciting musical projects to look forward to this year and next. Dicks: The Musical is hitting theaters on October 20th, Disney's animated feature Wish is being released this Thanksgiving, and The Color Purple is coming to the big screen on December 25th. On January 12th, 2024 the musical adaptation of Mean Girls is coming to theaters before it's released on Paramount+. Joker: Folie ? Deux is rumored to be a musical, and it's headed to the big screen on October 4, 2024. Part One of the long-awaited Wicked movie is coming Thanksgiving 2024.

Matthew Vaughn Talks Kick-Ass Reboot:

"We will be doing a reboot of Kick-Ass next year, but it's a total... it's like... it's as brave as the first one but totally different and more reflective of the times we're in," Vaughn told ComicBook.com at NYCC.

He added, "Kick-Ass sort of changed people's perception of what a superhero film is at that time. So we're doing it again, so it's none of the characters from the other Kick-Ass. We'd like to bring them back after the reboot, but this reboot, it's just going off on a tangent that I can't I really can't talk about that."

Stay tuned for more updates from NYCC.

Matthew Vaughn Was Told "You'll Never Work in This Town Again" After Ditching X-Men 3 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/matthew-vaughn-was-told-youll-never-work-in-this-town-again-after-ditching-x-men-3-nycc/ Sun, 15 Oct 2023 00:27:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak ab5e4e79-8d78-4e04-864e-2cc4538645f5

New York Comic Con is currently in full swing, and while actors in attendance are unable to discuss their projects due to the SAG strike, some directors are there are sharing insights into their past and future films. During a panel, Matthew Vaughn confirmed he's working on a Kick-Ass reboot as well as Kingsman 3, and also discussed his time working in the X-Men franchise. Vaughn is known for helming X-Men: First Class, but he almost directed X-Men: The Last Stand. He revealed during the panel that he left the project after a fake script was written to trick Halle Berry (Storm). He also recalled being told he'd never work in Hollywood again after leaving the project.

"Yeah, that was bizarre because I went from Layer Cake, a tiny 3 million pound movie, and suddenly I got Hollywood calling up saying, 'Would you like to make an X-Men movie?' And I was like, 'Yes.' And I thought X-2 is a masterpiece. So I was worried about trying to step into Bryan Singer's shoes, and it was a dream come true. I storyboarded the movie. The end of the movie was not the movie I was gonna make. The Golden Gate sequence was the beginning of Act Two and we had this crazy action sequence for Washington ... but I was naive," Vaughn explained.

"The way I produce films was, 'Here's a budget and a schedule, stick to it.' And Hollywood doesn't work that way. They go, 'Here's the budget. Here's a schedule. We're going to pretend we're going to do it for that and then we'll make it all up,' and I didn't know that. I didn't know that back then. so I was naive to walk out. I was given the speech, 'You'll never work in this town again,' and I sort of believed in that," he continued.

"The man who said you'll never work in this town again, watched Kick-Ass. And to his credit, he rang me up and said, 'You know what, I didn't mean it when I said that,'" Vaughn added.

While Vaughn has no plans to return to the world of X-Men, he did tease his Kick-Ass reboot at NYCC.

"We will be doing a reboot of Kick-Ass next year, but it's a total... it's like... it's as brave as the first one but totally different and more reflective of the times we're in," Vaughn told ComicBook.com.

Stay tuned for more updates from NYCC.

Matthew Vaughn Quit X-Men 3 After Fake Script Was Written to Trick Halle Berry https://comicbook.com/movies/news/x-men-3-matthew-vaughn-quit-fake-halle-berry-script/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 23:55:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 38df29a3-e0d8-4646-aabc-9d8d1e7569bc

At one point, Matthew Vaughn was set to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, the end cap to 20th Century's first live-action series based on the classic Marvel property. As the director has now revealed, he decided to leave the project because of how the studio wanted to treat one of the film's leads. During a spotlight panel at New York Comic Con, Vaugn revealed one studio executive had sent Halle Berry a fake script with sensitive matter included as a way to coax the star into agreeing to appear.

"One of the main reasons I actually quit X3 and it was a true story, and I don't care if I'm not meant to say it, but Hollywood is really political in an odd way. I went into one of the executives office and I saw an X3 script and I immediately knew that it was a lot fatter. I was like, 'What the hell's this? This draft?' Oh, don't worry about it. Like no, no, I'm the director," Vaughn said during the panel. "I'm worrying about this draft. Tell me what it is. Wouldn't tell me, so I grabbed it from him. It was like a crazy moment, but I grabbed it. Open the first page and it said Africa, Storm. kids dying have no water, she creates a thunderstorm and saves all these children. Okay, it's pretty cool idea."

That's when Vaughn said the executive pointed out the scene was only included to get Berry to agree to appear in the flick, and the studio wanted to axe the moment after Berry signed her contract.

"They said it was the 'The Halle Berry script,' because she hasn't signed up yet. But once she gets what she wants it to be and she signs up, we'll throw it in the bin," the filmmaker added. "And I was like, 'Wow, you're going to do that to an Oscar winning actress who plays Storm? I'm out of here. So I quit."

Even though he ended up not directing X-Men: The Last Stand, Vaughn would go on to work for 20th Century Fox on X-Men: First Class, the first film in the studio's second trilogy.

Marvel's X-Men reboot has yet to set a release date. Most of Fox's X-Men movies can now be seen streaming on Disney+.

Kick-Ass Reboot, Kingsman 3 Confirmed by Matthew Vaughn https://comicbook.com/movies/news/kick-ass-reboot-kingsman-3-confirmed-by-matthew-vaughn/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 23:29:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak ab4986e3-4b64-42f2-87e6-66e5ea328dbb

Matthew Vaughn is known for helming an array of films including Kick-Ass and Kingsman, which are both worlds the director plans to return to. Kingsman 3 was previously announced, and franchise star Taron Egerton thought the movie would go into production this year. Due to the ongoing SAG strike, it's unlikely the movie will begin filming in 2023, but Vaughn took part in a panel at New York Comic Con, and confirmed he will be making the threequel next year in addition to another Kick-Ass film.

Back in 2021, Vaughn spoke more about his Kick-Ass reboot when chatting with ComicBook.com.

"Oh, you've got a big reboot, a big reboot of Kick-Ass in two years. Big reboot ... It's so f*cking nuts that I can't talk about it. But we've got that ready to go. All the rights revert back in two years and then we're going to reboot it where people will be like, 'He is insane,'" Vaughn revealed.

When asked why he's doing a reboot instead of Kick-Ass 3, Vaughn replied, "Because I think the clue is in the title. I think Kick-Ass ... it became a new type of genre. Everyone went like- whenever we made it, everyone was like, 'Oh, you can't make R-rated superheroes. No one will want to see an R-rated superhero. You can't do this. You can't do that.' So, [LAUGH] when we- I had to say 'dare' and it was so nuts that I went, 'Yeah, great. It'll cause just as much controversy and everyone will talk about it and as many people will love it will hate it.' Um, but I'm not saying it hasn't got the characters in it and won't have, you know. I'm just saying it's not what any of-anyone could be imagining what it is. And I'm going to need one very, very brave actor or actress to play the new Kick-Ass because it will scare the shit out of them."

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie Gets an A+ CinemaScore https://comicbook.com/movies/news/taylor-swifts-eras-tour-movie-gets-an-a-cinemascore/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 21:02:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 565579c1-0b14-4ea7-ba85-bba889c40b14

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour is now playing in theaters and the film is not only dominating the box office with the second-highest October opening day ever and impressing critics with a 100 percent perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences are enchanted by the film as well. The film version of Swift's groundbreaking Eras Tour concert has received an A+ CinemaScore.

CinemaScore assigns its letter score based on the responses to a six-question poll that the market research firm asks moviegoers after seeing the film. As CinemaScores go, an A+ is somewhat rare -- as of 2020 there were only around 90 films to receive that distinction, including The Avengers, Frozen, and Black Panther. Additionally, a perfect CinemaScore is often a strong indicator of a box office success and thus far that has certainly been the case for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour. The film is projected to bring in $100. million this weekend alone.

What Is Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie About?

(iykyk)"

Taylor Swift is Also Set to Direct a Feature Film

In late 2022 it was announced that Swift will direct a feature film for Searchlight Pictures after helming several of her own music videos -- including All Too Well: The Short Film. The currently untitled film is based on a script written by Swift, but additional details have not been made public amid Swift's busy schedule, as well as the recent Hollywood strikes.

"Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller. It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey," Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield said in a statement when the film was first announced to be in development.

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy recently had praise for Swift, comparing her to Steven Spielberg as a "generational voice and creative force."

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour is in theaters now.

Three-time Academy Award nominee Piper Laurie has passed away at age 91. The actor's manager, Marion Rosenberg, confirmed the sad news to Variety, sharing, "A beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time." Her cause of death was not disclosed. Throughout her career, Laurie earned Oscar nominations for The Hustler (1961), Carrie (1977), and Children of a Lesser God (1987).

In The Hustler, she played Sarah Packard opposite Paul Newman's Eddie Felson as they embarked on a doomed romance amidst his pool hustling and her alcoholism. In Carrie, she portrayed Margaret White, the terrifying mother of Sissy Spacek's Carrie White. In Children of a Lesser God, she earned her nomination for her portrayal of Mrs. Norman alongside the late William Hurt.

In addition to the roles that earned her Academy Award nominations, Laurie had over 100 acting credits to her name. She was known to many for playing Catherine Martell in Twin Peaks, a role she did not reprise in the recent reboot. Laurie was also nominated for nine Emmys throughout her career, winning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special in 1987 for playing Annie Gilbert in Promise. She was also nominated for her appearances in Studio One, Playhouse 90, The Bunker, The Thorn Birds, St. Elsewhere, Twin Peaks, and Fraiser.

Throughout her career, Laurie also earned a BAFTA nomination for The Hustler, and four Golden Globe nominations, including a win for Carrie.

The Strangers Trilogy Gets Official Poster https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-strangers-trilogy-gets-official-poster/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 18:58:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak c5ee906f-8c72-4c3f-bc1c-c0c9c67a9871

The Strangers was released back in 2008, and it took ten years for the horror film to finally get a sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night. Now, the franchise is returning in the form of not just one new movie, but an entire trilogy. All three films have already been shot and will be released next year. The Strangers: Chapter 1 stars Riverdale's Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, and Rachel Shenton. This week, a new poster for the trilogy was released.

You can read a description of the new The Strangers here: "From master director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2, The Exorcist: The Beginning) comes a new trilogy of terror. In Chapter I, Madelaine Petsch stars as a young woman starting a new life with her fianc?. Suddenly, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, they become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. What begins as a fight to stay alive becomes one woman's journey of courage and cunning in this horror series bridging three compelling films." You can view the poster below:

Renny Harlin Talks The Strangers:

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Harlin spoke about his plans for the new trilogy and teased the films will have nods to the original 2008 movie.

"I have to say that the original Strangers is one of my favorite horror films ever," Harlin shared. "I remember seeing it and not knowing anything about it and being just blown away that how random it's violence is, how these people get into a city situation which they don't understand at all. And us as the audience keep wondering why. And we realized like you said, it's just because they happen to be home in that house. And that's exactly what we are exploring."

He continued, "For me, it was very important to give the fans of the original film, give them the same experience. Obviously, the movie is not a carbon copy in any way, but it definitely has a similar story of two young people in an environment that should be cozy and safe and turns out to be a night of all nightmares. And I think it was very important to give the fans the similar experience that they enjoyed the first time. And then those who don't know anything about the original can come here just with no expectations, give them something that will blow their socks off."

"I, as a fan of the original film, I wanted something that feels familiar, feels, truthful to the original. And then we obviously, we made a second movie and a third movie at the same time because we wanted to explore the reasons behind this. I feel like myself, and I'm sure a lot of the people who love the original film were asking the question, like, 'Why did this happen?' and 'Who were these people?' and 'Where did they come from?' and 'Where are they going next?' and that's the kind of answers that I wanted to explore in the second and the third movie and just go beyond what the original movie was."

No official release date for The Strangers: Chapter 1 has been confirmed, but the movie and its two sequels will be released in 2024.
